Have you ever been in a position where everything's going well for you, but you can't enjoy it because people you care about are doing poorly? That's pretty much where I'm at now.

I just bought a fairly nice four wheel drive truck (a Mazda B2600i) and got a sporterized Springfield '03 rifle which is pretty neat. I'm now going to the most highly regarded private college in my area as opposed to the community college that I'd been attending. Now that the Fall term's started I'll be in school, which is a welcome change from the pretty terrible job I've been working at all Summer. To top it all off, I just learned today that a friend I made online is coming to the West coast for an anime convention that's only about a three hour drive from my house (as opposed to being on the opposite side of the continent, where she lives) and she wants to meet up and have lunch. There are other good things going on in my life too that I've specifically chose to exclude because some of the more left wing people here may find them objectionable (I've never been a big "black rifle" guy, but some of my dad's friends are making their "modern muskets" look pretty tempting, especially after having the chance to handle a couple of them), but the point is that there's a lot I should be thankful for.

Unfortunately, many of the people around me aren't doing well. My sister got kicked out of the house for being pretty shockingly aggressive with grandpa recently and I can't help but worry about her. She's been more or less couch surfing for the past five years and in that time she's grown extremely confrontational for some reason. We've fairly consistently had to move her into a new place about every four or five weeks in that time and she's always left on bad terms with people. Now, she's out of places to go, including home.

On top of that, a relative of a friend died recently. I don't know the details. I've been sort of anxious about bringing it up. I know that she's having a rough time though. She's also been having issues at work and has just generally been feeling terrible.

My dad's been having issues with his girlfriend. I don't see either of them as often as I probably should, but I know he's sleeping on the couch now. She just started using a new psychotropic drug which she can't drink while she's on. I'd never seen her sober before, so I imagine that not drinking is extremely difficult for her.

There doesn't really seem to be anything standing in my way, preventing me from doing well or being happy, but I can't help but feel less than enthusiastic. Anybody have any advice for me?

Just be the best friend you could be, while continuing to be happy.

You didn't cause the people's problems--but you could still be there as a friend.

It's better that you're happy--it makes it easier to make others happy.

Yeah----it's simplistic--but it's the truth, from my standpoint.
