...buying stamps.

I went to the shop section, spent some time looking at what they had, but the selection was sparse; all they had were Walt Disney series stamps, wedding themed stamps, and one other that I don't recall that didn't interest me either.

So I got in line and bought the stamps at the main counter.

The point of this tedium is: I spent a good ten or so minutes in there.

As I was heading to my car to leave: a pickup drove slowly past in the parking lot, and I recognized the guy on the passenger side as the man who had been just ahead of me in line inside; as they drove by, I could very clearly hear him say to the driver (as he motioned directly at me; even making brief direct eye contact with me): "That's the guy."

The guy?

What guy?

So he'd told his friend all about me, had he?

I'd done nothing except browse through the shop area, then stand in line and buy stamps; that's all.

So what was there to say about me?

What was so damned noteworthy about me in particular that moved this individual to tell his buddy about me?

It certainly wasn't the first time that's happened to me; but as in every such instance: I felt things and impulses that I would not care to post about on a public message board (which tells you plenty; given what I have posted here).

Just needed to get it off my chest; nothing further to add.

That was certainly weird. And it's one of those things that, no matter how much you think about it, you won't be able to figure out what was going on.

I had something like that once; I was on my lunch break, and had gone to the library, which was right next to my place of work. I was on my way back to work, when I decided to stop at the store across the street. I saw this man in a suit standing in the parking lot of the convenience store across from the library. As I crossed the street, he suddenly whipped out a camera and snapped my picture. I stopped and stared at him in amazement, but he wouldn't make eye contact. I looked behind me, wondering if there was something else he could have taken a picture of, but the way he had done it, convinced me that he meant to capture me on film. I was too nervous to confront him, but that still bothers me.

Actually most of that ten minutes was spent waiting in line, lol.

But it did feel dehumanizing: that guy acting as if he'd seen Bigfoot or something. (I mean: am I that freakish?)

I wouldn't know. Never met you. Are you trying to be freakish?

Once I was in a restaurant with a coworker. I did a double-take at a woman across the room - she looked so much like my sister it was uncanny. My coworker said 'what are you looking at' and I told her. So she did a huge about-face in her seat and stared at the woman. When I protested, she said loudly, "Oh she didn't hear what you said about her anyway." I wanted to crawl under the table. I bet that woman hasn't forgotten it either. To this day I wish I'd had the guts to go over and apologize, and tell her why I was looking at her.

I know that hurts. A few months ago, when I was in an unfamiliar remote part of town (I live in AK), I got geographically lost. Ironically, I have a pretty good sense of direction but I cannot magically "know" the streets. I had a meltdown in my car - I HATE being lost/frustrated. I needed to find the remote post office to pick up a package. Out of necessity, I went into a nearby grade school to ask for directions and cried uncontrollably. I was so embarrassed - I'm very shy. I almost fainted. I just needed directions to the post office since I knew I was near. I hate when outsiders laugh at my difference. Harsh.

Oh, incidentally, the package I had to pick up at the remote post office was a astronomy map of the Northern Hemisphere night sky (glow-in-the-dark). Ironically, this map would not help me find the post office.

I was leaning more toward the latter option; high quality NT's don't generally express themselves out loud in that manner when they see me (being discreet enough to save it for after I'm entirely gone, I suppose).

These guys just didn't care whether I could hear them or not.
