I guess the migraines were not over, they just got less painful for a couple of days.

I think this is like day 27 of constant migraines, but I am not sure. I have been to the emergency room three times.

I can't really think straight.

Have you had an MRI?

I had an MRI over two years ago, the doctor thinks that is sufficient.

The doctor directed me to go to the ER and and have them administer dihydroergotamine, but when I went to the ER, the doctor there said that the drug had been on back order for months and was not available anywhere in the USA.

But you didn't had constant migraines two years ago, right? You should really insist to get a new MRI.

well, I guess the experts don't feel the same.

They want to try IV steroids for 5 days.

Maybe I am being punished for something. Was I a bad person in a past life?

You should file a complaint against that ER, and have your doctor personally call and order them to administer a substitute.

I only went to an ER once successfully for a migraine. They gave me a shot of demerol (a strong narcotic) and it was gone in 15 minutes.

Hospitals are far more concerned with keeping drug addicts from getting drugs than they are with helping sick people get cured.

they gave me dilaudid on my second ER visit. it gave me a days relief, the doctor offered it on the last visit, but I would have been stuck there and it would only be temporary relief.

a days relief stuck in a hospital or so drugged I cant do anything isnt a great deal.

Tomorrow I am supposed to finally start the IV treatment.

I feel like my life has fallen apart in the last month.

I struggle to type because my hands are shaking so much.

I don't understand why it took so long to arrive a treatment.

I don't even know if it will work, but I feel grateful that they are at least going to try something, yet somehow I hate them for letting me suffer so long.

Sounds like hell to go through that. I can definitely empathize with the anger you have towards doctors for letting you suffer this long before they bothered to act. It really sucks to be in that level of suffering and still have to advocate your own interests. Doctors like to wait until you are on the cusp of death before they act, waiting until the 11th hour and not a moment sooner.

Have they tried botox injections yet? Botox is approved to treat chronic migraines.

They have referred me to the "other" headache clinic for the Botox treatment. I dont know how long it will take.

The treatment started today. it is dexamethasone. It is used to treat some forms of cancer, High Altitude Pulmonary Edema and autoimmune disorders. I went home and slept for 5 hours afterward and now I cant sleep.

Hopefully you don't have to wait a million years to get into the clinic offering botox like you would here.

When will you know if your new medication works?

Day two of the treatment, my pain level is down to 4-6/10 and my thinking is clearing.

Noca - I need to ask the doctor and I am going to ask for another round of imagery.

In the last MRI they found a small benign tumor in the bone behind my right ear, I think they should do another MRI

In the middle of all of this (week 3, right before the 2nd ER visit where they gave diluadid), somehow I managed to interview for and was offered a job as the lead ecologist at Joshua Tree National Park.

I'm not sure how that happened, but I am glad it did. It is a dream job :)

Wow that is an impressive achievement and congratulations. I hope your migraines just stop for good - as sometimes happens. Mine stopped for long periods (up to ten years apart) and there was nothing obvious to explain it. Unfortunately they are back now.

I think there is something else going on that is causing the migraines and I need to have some more imaging done and another appointment with my doctor.

I have a small benign tumor in the bone behind my right ear and I think it is causing much if the pain from a mass effect.

As for the job, when you live with pain long enough, you either have to learn to work through it or be homeless. I have done the homeless thing. I am not a big fan of it.
