Not trying to bring you all down here. Just trying to get through the rest of the day after the memorial service for a friend from church. I'll feel better tomorrow.

Abe was a good man who ran into some bad health issues. First, a tropical disease hit hit while working overseas about 20 years ago. This slowly attacked his lungs, heart, and kidneys. He survived a massive heart attack about five years ago, which resulted in the discovery of imminent kidney failure. After rejecting two separate kidney transplants, he was put on dialysis. He died last week of pneumonia and other complications, about three years after the death of his wife (from cancer).

He leaves behind two adult children (in their 30s).

I was a pallbearer. The service was touching. Hardly anyone was unaffected. I wept quietly all the way through it. Abe led a happy and full life, except for the last few years. We all miss him.

I'm sitting here watching cat videos and sipping some beer. No cause for concern, I'm just feeling very sad.

My condolences on the loss of your friend, Fnord. It is times like these that one realizes just how finite our lifetimes really are.

Yeah, no worries, eh?

I’ve been through this before. It doesn’t get any easier, but I know what to expect.

Abe wouldn’t have wanted a huge emotional scene, so some of us are getting together next Friday night for a little beer and cards party in his honor.

Again, no worries.

Thanks!

I do not doubt you are able to handle this, Fnord. But I'm sorry for your loss, anyway.

Sorry to hear that, Fnord. I'm just getting to that age where the funerals outnumber the weddings, and I agree with your sentiment that there's no better way to ease the pain than to gather to remember the deceased in the way that they would have wished in life. The wakes that I've attended have all had smiles and laughs through the tears as we've reminisced, which is as it should be, IMHO.
RIP, Abe.

I'm in my sixties, and I attend more funerals than weddings.

In the tradition of Abe's people, there will likely be another observance in about 40 days, and another in about 1 year. Family and friends getting together and staying together over the long haul -- one benefit of going to church.

Sorry about your loss. I hope the Land where he winds up is better than the Land he lived in previously.
