So I read that the Doomsday clock is staying at two minutes to midnight. This really concerns me because no one in this country (if you could call it that) seems to be giving a rat's ass about nuclear bombs and how powerful they are. They probably think it's as harmless and not a big deal when it is more than that. People may call this "overreacting", but this is a genuine concern and I have every right to worry.

People who have voted for Trump have no knowledge of nuclear war and how serious it is. I also don't like the fact that they were even invented and used to bomb two cities in Japan in WWII. I don't know what FDR or HST was thinking when they ordered the bombs to be dropped, but he doesn't seem to care. Yes, Japan had the equally serious Unit 731, and innocent lives were in fact lost, but it doesn't excuse us from taking millions of lives with two atomic bombs.

I used to not worry about this in the past, but after watching the Protect and Survive PIF on Youtube (I was into PIFs a few years ago, they're basically PSAs overseas, how I became interested in that is a different story), I have every reason to be concerned. It also didn't help that there were other nuclear bomb-themed films released in the '80s (Threads and The Day After, to name a couple), as well as a Mister Rogers special devoted to nuclear war.

I'd like to apologize for triggering others in my post, but honestly, that's how I feel, and the thought of it is scary.

Believe me I completely understand how you feel. There is NO good excuse for what we did to Japan and every time I hear other Americans defend that incident it sickens me inside and makes me feel ashamed to be an American.

If nuclear bombs get dropped on us one day I guess we can chalk that up to karma can't we?

Except it's not just the US that is being targeted, but other countries, too. I honestly can't imagine what life would be like if everything on our living planet was destroyed. Sometimes I wish technology would be made so that we can live on Mars and start life on that planet.

Also, I wish I was a different species so that I stop worrying about this. I mean, all cats do is eat, sleep, and go potty in litterboxes, as well as live a carefree life. Makes me wonder why I have to be human.

...I certainly think that what happened to people in Hiroshima, etc., was horrible  ... But, if the planned land invasion of Japan had happened, what kind of bloodbath do you think it would have been :( ? Yes, I realize that this is the " yes, but " defense that is generally used. What else do you think could have been done? I suppose that Truman (who was not told of the Bomb until he succeeded to the Presidency) could have tried to drop it on a deserted island somewhere. I honestly don't know what Unit 731 was.

At least you feel bad about it. Most of the Americans I know feel NO guilt about it whatsoever.

@ASS-P, all I could say (without triggering others) is that Unit 731 were a group of Japanese doctors and scientists who experimented on Chinese and Russian people like guinea pigs. It was pretty bad.

Didn't they also rape and kill Chinese civilians?

Some days I wonder if the US will be left standing by 2020-2024. I shouldn't be this doubtful, but I am. Most people nowadays are more concerned about how big Kim Kardashian's ass is than the world coming to an end. It's like in the movie Idiocracy, where this country is more concerned about fart jokes and sexual innuendos than plant life and humanitarian crises. People need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that everything is not okay.

Something that needs to be mentioned is that the US, Germany and Japan all had nuclear programs during WW2. Germany lost most of their most talented scientists to the Allies due to certain policies, especially targeting Jewish citizens. The German nuclear program was also sabatauged from within by resistance fighters.

When Germany was almost defeated, Dönitz sent a submarine (the U-234) loaded with 1200 pounds of uranium oxide towards Japan. It also contained Germany weapon designs. Also on board were two Japanese officers to help with the transfer process. The submarine surrendered to the US once the crew knew about Germany’s surrender. The Japanese offercers committed suicide rather than be captured alive by the US.

While some think that the shipment was destined to be used as catalysts for fuels, there were active cyclotrons in Japan that were being used in research laboratories to separate fissionable U-235 from the U-238. That amount would potentially have contained about 20% of what would have been needed for a crude nuclear device.

I am not justifying that nuclear bombs needed to be used to end the war. I want others to know that Japan was not a totally innocent party as they did play in that arena too. One of their top nuclear scientist told his wife at the time that they would have used the nuclear bomb first in war if they could have.

The Unit 731 story is a different can of worms. Most of the data captured from it is still classified and is still being used in certain forms of research. Same thing with some of the data captured from German biological studies done in concentration camps during the same era.

No side is ever innocent in any war, but the victors always sweep every atrocious thing they ever did to the enemy under the rug when recording history and then focus on every bad thing that the enemy did in order to deflect any blame off of any evil they did themselves.

Americans have perfected this within their own country.

If you absolutely insist upon worrying about things over which you have absolutely no control, imagine if you will a country whose military and intelligence services are thoroughly ridden with Taliban & Al Qaeda sympathizers and which routinely facilitates terrorist attacks upon it's neighbor, with which it's fought three wars in the past century, and countless skirmishes and raids. Both are nuclear armed, maintain a hyper-alert state of readiness equivalent to our DEFCON 2, and where individual field commanders have nuclear release authority without recourse to civilian government or higher echelons of military command.

A War Between India and Pakistan: Nuclear Weapons Could Fly (And Millions Die)
A Global Nuclear Winter: Avoiding the Unthinkable in India and Pakistan

"According to studies done at Rutgers, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and the University of California-Los Angeles, if both countries detonated 100 Hiroshima-sized bombs, it would generate between 1 and 5 million tons of smoke. Within 10 days, that would drive temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere down to levels too cold for wheat production in much of Canada and Russia. The resulting 10 percent drop in rainfall — especially in Asian locales that rely monsoons — would exhaust worldwide food supplies, leading to the starvation of up to 100 million or more people.
Aside from the food crisis, a nuclear war in South Asia would destroy between 25 to 70 percent of the Northern Hemisphere’s ozone layer, resulting in a massive increase in dangerous ultraviolent radiation."
And that's the best-case scenario; assuming that their respective allies; Russia and the PRC, don't get dragged into the conflict.

There; feel better now?

Nukes are unbelievably scary, but that fact alone can act as a deterrent towards their use. One can argue that their existence has so far prevented larger scale conflicts, as the risk is too great for both parties.

There are things that currently exist that are actually worse than nuclear weapons in my opinion. I do not want to discuss them here as it will likely trigger others.

I know many people curse the scientists that created nuclear weapons in the first place. I wish that nuclear science could have been developed outside of the grasps of war. Unfortunately, the folly of man is destruction at his own hands, be it intentional or not. It would have only taken only one person to modify something used for the greater good (creation of almost unlimited electrical sources) to become a weapon used against others. Even I am not immune to that influence.

One of my past special interests was in the field of knowing every possible combination of lethal methods I could find information on (or could be combined). I was once known as a poison king for what I knew. It is something that I deeply regret doing. I was in a very dark part of my life and wanted something that I should never have sought. Even then, it does not legitimize what I was after. The knowledge that I gained on that topic is part of my curse, as I cannot forget it no matter how hard I try to. That is the price I pay for going down that path.

The threat of all out nuclear war and its aftermath was a good preventer of its usage in the past. However, it only takes one side that wants to be erased for that deterrent to fall apart. If one side is willing to die on purpose (much like a suicide bomber), then no one is safe anywhere.
