When I talked to my therapist, I often felt like a blind man trying to describe the color purple.

The rest of the time I felt like a blind man describing the color purple to a deaf man.

How's that supposed to help?

I dunno...seems a waste..

Lots of people think therapy is very helpful - but I agree with you - I haven't ever gotten anything out of it

Is your therepist informed about AS?I dont feel that many "talk" therepies work for people with AS.Cognitive can be helpful to some but only if your NT therepist doesnt suffer from ToM and is unable to understand the basc difference in AS experiences.

You could either have an incompitant(or worse and as common, insane)therepist or their style of therepy is not effective for aspies.I would trust your "gut" feeling and find a different therepist.I found Rational emotive Therepy to work the best for me because ,even thought she was always harping on about my "black and white thinking","intellectualizing my emotions"...*Yawns*,it did help me challange some of my counter productive thought patterns and behaviors.

ToM....the ability to understand that other people have their own thoughts, needs and emotions, sensory experiences. We know it "intellectually" at least as adults, but often forget when in the process of interacting with others. The current theory,is that aspies have no ToM.All based on an absurd test done with some little kids involving a doll.My own theory is that many NT's have more problems with ToM because their "experiences" are the majority and anything different from the majority is viewed as "flawed" to them. We,on the other hand, are quit used to people missunderstanding our emtions,ideas,motives,deisres,etc....they are constantly being misinturpreted by NT's.....so,we are more likely to understand that others must have their own minds because we see evidence of how "other" they perceive ours.

it doesn't.

Therapy is as useless as a rusty bike without wheels. You don't go anywhere with it.

It sucks even more, because most therapists don't know much about AS.

I don't even know where to start about how useless all of my talk therapies were.

Here's what works for me.

25mgs of Adderall, 5mgs of Cipralex, and taking life day by day, working through life's BS on my own, and conquering life one day at a time.

Medication is where it's at, bro. Screw talk therapy. It's like talking to piece of wood with a smilie-face on it.

Let's agree to disagree here shall we?

One to one therapy with my psychiatrist didn't work too well because he was a busy man and each appointment only lasted 45 minutes. Group therapy with five or six people suffering similar ailments to mine was amazing and the difference it made was noticable to anyone who knew me at the time. The behavioral therapy sessions took hours and they helped give me the social skills I needed to get on in life.
