As many of you know, I am usually one of the most cheerful, most optimistic people on here. When most of you joined, you were greeted by my world-famous "Welcome to WP!", and many of you complimented my funny, witty, insightful posts, and sound, intelligent advice.

But right now, I am a very troubled soul. Last night, after another fiasco in my chemistry class, in which I am having a lot of trouble, I came back to my dorm room and came very close to having a meltdown. I am borderline AS/NT, but I am worried I might be regressing toward pure AS. In addition to my chemistry class problems, I am very lonely. I have made virtually no friends, and as far as dating, I don't stand a chance. Poiltically, I am Libertarian, and socially, I am liberal. And I want to date like-minded people, but nobody in the Wichita Falls-Lawton area--Aspie or NT--fits that description. Nearly everybody here is very socially and politically conservative. The financial burdens of being a full-time college student, and an explosive sex drive don't help matters any.

I have tried to keep my feelings bottled up, and I can't do that any more. In the title of this thread, my "snapping" refers to the fact that I vented at full-force. Tomorrow, after my economics class, I'm going to the Counseling Center and talk to someone. I hope people there can help me. If they can't, I am going to call my parents and ask them to pick me up and take me back to Houston.

Tim

College can really be difficult with AS. I can definitely relate to what you're going through. However, I'm going to jump on board here as your cheerleader and tell you not to give up. Over the past ten years of working on my degree, I've gone through:

- anorexia which nearly killed me
- a divorce
- working six part time jobs to keep my bills, rent and tuition paid (I lived alone after I left my ex)
- meeting and marrying my husband, which meant an out of state move and a several year break from college
- two children born
- a serious health condition caused by my second pregnancy, which took about a year to recover fully from
- and of course, AS

Now I am tackling the math class I put off until last. I failed my first big assignment too, and I tell you man, I felt like giving up. My road hasn't been easy. But you know, I decided that I am not going to stop working my a$$ off for what I want. I've gotten two A's on the next two lessons. Now, if I had to spend my life exactly as it is right now forever...I'd probably go insane. But I know this is temporary. Just like your chem class is temporary.

Keeping your feelings bottled up isn't an effective management strategy for anyone. I think the Counseling Center sees this type of thing you're going through frequently, and I'm sure they will have some valuable input for you.

Hang in there.

Sorry that you are feeling this way... :(
I have made no friends at my course either, so I guess that I may be feeling similar to you. And dating...I don't think it will happen for me either.
Good luck with the councelling and hope all goes well. Maybe going back to Houston would be good for you...to be in farmiliar surroundings.

Friends, dating, and sex are all overrated.

Tim, why did you move to an area full of people with such different attitudes? Sounds like you went to the beach, and now you're upset because there's sand everywhere.

And if you moved there because you couldn't learn what you wanted to in a more liberal area, do you think you can just say to hell with them all for three or four years or whatever it is, and then move after you graduate? Seems like if you can't, you may have to go back to Houston for a bit, and then try to start up again somewhere less backwards.

Agreed.

However, unlike other basic human needs like food, water, and shelter, their fulfillment can be postponed.

I went up there because it was the cheapest school I could find where I could take algebra and trig-based physics (as opposed to calculus-based) and only 2 semesters of calculus (as opposed to 3).

If I could have afforded it, I would have gone to the University of Washington.

Bah, theres a lot of poverty and crackheads up there anyway, plus I heard the girls there are dirty (in a bad way!). But the landscapes are beautiful there, I loved living in Washington. For that reason anyway.

You can always get a transfer up here and live with me, username88, MADDuck and the others who want to (I forget already when they're available to come). :D I know, I'm a shameless plug. But read my threads anyway!

Tim, don't despair. I've felt like that before but you've gotta stay optimistic and keep with it. Things will get better.

Well Tim, sorry not to thank you for the welcome, my bad...

Sorry to hear that the old social interface is a problem I can relate [kind of].
All I can say is kia kaha [be strong] and persevere, I have had a lot of problems as a result of bolting whenever it got problematic and it has meant that while having had a lot of interesting life experiences I have missed or blown opportunities and have been quite unsuccessful in the material/social sense.
As for dating, it is hard, if you are like me your lack of guile and open expression scares off people you are interested in, hopefully you are not! I have found that when you stop hungering the contact/affection and sex is when someone looks you up and down, listens to you and accepts you - even if it doesn't last, like mine don't, lol.

The Vikings used to say that a man [or woman I assume] needs four things to satisfy his needs, food, flax, fire and frig - food, clothes, warmth/shelter and love/sex...
I hope your skies clear, peace j

Yup
Im studying psychology at UNH. Not that Im trying to counsel you. I sit at coffe shops and do my homework so that I feel like the world is watching me not fail. Like, I cant fail, look what I might become...look at that girl going into work at the gas station, I can't do something like that all my life. I don't have a boyfriend or any friends. I moved here from new york and I just get so bummed out I don't know what to do. People wonder about me..what's wrong with her?? what do you do? Thing is, they're all wrong, so wrong. And the people around you must be too. Why don't we make a pact. You reach out to one potentially worthwhile person a day (if you can find one) and I will too. i have this 'friend' who always tells me that he's never been close to anyone really in his whole life. "not too many people have known me" he says. By the way he's so smart and he has his own company (millionaire and all that) but he's always alone. Every day, except for me and the guys he meets at the diner in the morning he sees no one in an intimitite way. Moral of the story is, that this isolation thing can last...it doesn't just magically change
Maybe you can transfer. Just start looking at other schools, clubs, take an art class. That's my advice to you and me.
YUP!

Yikes.

Can you look at finding ways to get the money to transfer?

If not, do you think you can grit your teeth and get through school where you are?

You've got to get your education one way or the other, Tim. It's so easy for us aspies to get stuck in go-nowhere jobs, or none at all. You can get away with being different a lot more easily if you have knowledge the NT's need. Without that, it can really be tough.

Hang in there, Tim! I will keep you in my prayers. Go easy on yourself and give yourself permission to not 'have it all together' all the time. Stress does make AS symptoms worse, so try to find some small ways to lighten your load a bit.

Yes, they are.

Unfortunately, when they vastly outnumber you, they are stronger, no matter how wrong they are. Any zombie movie will teach you that.

That's why you've got to either get away, or keep your head down so they don't notice you.
