I came downstairs after finishing wrapping up my christmas presents for my family, and found my step brother, who I've never met before, sat in my living room. Right now, I don't know how to feel.

One side of me is happy, because now I'm not alone. I have someone my age that I'll be able to talk to on a frequent basis when he (hopefully) starts to become part of our family. On the other hand, I feel worried about the future, because he's nothing like what I am, and so it's going to be strange to get used to him and find something in common. We're different because (and apologies for using labels here) I'm much more of an Indie/Emo-kinda guy, he's a chav. That mix isn't gonna work...

At the end of the day, I want a strong bond between us, because this is a guy who's had a life much worse than mine, and I just don't know how to approach this situation... I want to make him feel comfortable with us, so he feels welcomed... but it's too confusing right now.

Bleh.

To get acceptance, give it.

You are home, he is off base, help.

Have you ever met anyone you could not learn something from?

I wouldn't be too quick to stereotype him; regardless of his background and appearance, he may not be what you expect. It must be exciting to suddenly find out about him, good luck! :)

I agree with Inventor. How do you know he's your step-brother if you never met him before?
Just treat him like a family member and he'll eventually seem like one.

Wow...yes, that was unexpected!
If I were you, I wouldn't know how to feel either.

I know that I have a brother who I have never met...but having someone in your living room who suddenly says that they are your step brother...that must have been one huge shock!

No offense, but those sorts of labels are incredibly stupid.

It's all just superficial titles based on fashion and music taste, it says nothing about your individual personalities. Just give him a chance.

I am so alone, "exiled" in US, only my daughter and I (no other family), I would be pleasantly "shocked" if someone would come in MY livingroom, saying that they are my friend, let alone my half-brother...enjoy him!! !
Forget about labels, like Phagocyte says, just be happy and get to know him.
Good luck and enjoy!! !

Yeah I know, hence why I wasn't too keen on using them. It was just the best way that I could give a clear image of the general picture of our differences.

I have accepted him already, for those people who thought I haven't, I'm just confused on how I'm meant to approach him on things.

Another point I may not have made clear also: I already knew I had a step bro because I was told about him, and my step Dad had met him previously, but I wasn't told when I was going to meet him, hence the surprise when I saw him there.

First congratulations on a new sibling. My son has several step brothers and sisters, and he is cool with it.

As far as the differences, it shouldn't be a problem. When I was a teenager, I was a New Waver/Metal Head (OK remember this was in the early 80s) and my best friend at the time was into Hip-Hop and R&B. And we gelled fine together. She'd come to Metallica concerts with me and enjoy them, I'd go to see Patti Labelle with her and enjoy it. It is good to open yourself up to other experiences. Besides, just because a person likes something you don't doesn't mean they aren't mad cool.

I think that because nobody told you about the meeting, you had an emotional overload, which I can totally understand. I mean it. Those are things that should be considered more carefully. I could see on TV that even NT surprise reunions can be pretty rough.

But anyway, better more brothers than less. Start knowing him better in your own time. He might be the brother you always wanted, but did not know you had. I feel like that about my best friend Sherry, I never expected that I will find a woman that I would feel so connected that I wondered if G-d sent me a sister, because I always wanted more people in my life, the good kind...

You went to some cool concerts :) . Just like you, I can say that my friend L. and I are TOTALLY different, but we are close really good friends, despite the fact that she's in Florida. And if I think more about friends I have, I am not so isolated like I feel sometimes, I have older friends (much older than I, that I love dearly) and other friends, the problem is that I am afraid to go out with them to places that are obnoxious, noisy, smelly etc. But anyway, I am straying from the subject, the new half brother... :)

Right, I guess I should keep you updated.

Second meeting yesterday, and it went a LOT better. Me, my Mum, Dad and the step bro went out for lunch, so I guess it was a load easier getting used to each other. He mentioned what he got for Christmas and all, and me enjoying gadgets and such, we got into proper talks and all when he mentioned he was given a pocket surfer thingy, so things are looking much better now. :)

"exiled"? Sorry for off-topic but this I had to question? It just sounds too interesting. And as your profile says your in Michigan... it's not an exile, it's an adventure! :) I mean we got 16" of snow two days ago and today it's -4 and tomorrow 50. :)
