Hey, I like Dream Theater too.

Why worry about it? It's okay to not like music.
Or maybe you're tone deaf or something, in which case it's all meaningless noise?

How about Pink Floyd? Ive always found the more I listen to it, the more their music grows on me (usually I suffer song-fatigue very quickly too)

I would recommend not to trust personal music recommendations. Trust impartial sources.

Here's my recommendation:

I am assuming that you have some music that you actually like. Some long-standing favorites that haven't gotten old on you yet.

-- Visit Amazon (the online bookstore, not the river, although that's worth visiting as well).
-- If you don't have an account already, create one.
-- Rate the music you like with appropriate ratings.
-- Rate the music you don't like with appropriate ratings.
-- See what kind of music Amazon recommends for you.

(Note that I am not specifically recommending that you buy music from Amazon. I'm not trying to promote sales, make anyone money, or get anyone to buy anything. I'm only recommending that you use their web site as a free online service for music recommendations.)

What Amazon is using for these recommendations is a type of "collaborative filter", which is an instance-based learning algorithm. It's comparing your reviews with the reviews of other customers, and conjecturing what other music you will like, based on the preferences of others. This algorithm is completely unbiased w/r/t personal preferences, and it's startlingly good. (It could be better, as they need to make runtime compromises and instance-based learners are "lazy" -- pardon the comp-sci lingo -- but it's certainly a good enough place to start.)

Give it a shot.

I can be the same way. Sometimes I think I like something based on the samples, but soon after listening to the complete album I lose interest. Other times I will like something for the first few listens and then I’ll get tired of it quickly.

Nowadays I just download stuff to see if I like it before I put my money into actually buying a CD.

The problem with Amazon is 30 second samples just don't cut it for me.

It also seems like their recommendations can be off. It seems more people buy based on the genre than based on what the songs actually sound like and Amazon’s recommendation system seems to reflect this. Stuff that’s all linked in with a certain “crowd” tends to get lumped together. I can like one band and hate another even though they are considered similar in terms of the genre.

Have you considering composing music that you like and playing that. We have nice free programs you can use (like Rosegarden) to create your own music. I admit there isn't much I like very much, and I don't find it is really genre specific. (although certain genres tend to have more bad stuff than good stuff)

Dream Theater's music is ridiculously complex (along with progressive music in general), I suggested them because I thought they'd serve better at holding matsuiny's attention.

...In the very least, they might last long enough for him to learn how to enjoy re-visiting songs (one of their songs, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, is 41 minutes 58 seconds long)

Try this. http://www.purevolume.com/ They're pretty sloppy at getting the genres right but they have a lot of genres.

Listen to this station, (WFMU) for about a week to hear most of the shows in order to see what you like. --Guaranteed, you'll most likely not have heard most of the artists and styles of music that they play on this station.

Just keep experimenting and if you don't like anything, that's okay. Keep in mind that a lot of popular music is boring if you listen to it instead of just hearing it in the background.
