I am a conservative liberatarian. I am not so I can justify greed. I have never been greedy. I am not to justify wealth, I am as poor as dirt.

I simply believe that each owns his own life. That means that each owns also the product of his own labour.

I am old and in poor health. I own a business because I can't promise to work a fixed schedule. Like many small business owners, o find I work for far less than minimum wage.

The enviro whackos are removing a needed medicine from the world. I am severely asthmatic. I need a rwscue inhaler and the HFA propelled beta antagonists don't work for me.

Past few weeks - since I have been economizing on my remaining adrenalin inhalers I have nearly died several times. I am weak and weak spiritually since.

I can't afford much in the way of medical care. My friend wants me to sign up for state assistance.

Yeh. I know that if it weren't for various pertubations of the economy that I could afford to pay the real life fees.

Yeh, I know that I a. legitimately poor.

But despite a goodly autistic case of Asperger's, lifelong severe asthma, rhuematoid aethritis, childhood abuse, a childhood rape, a neurological condition, and more. . .I do pay my way.

If I sign up, do I not sell my soul to the state? Sure I could use the help. But that does not make it right or in accord with my principles or my small bit of pride for having made it thus far.

I am confused and depressed.

I confess to not being qualified to give sound, logical, and thourough advice on the subject.

But there is nothing wrong with accepting assistance. Well theoretically it depends on your principals and values. But I think most of us would say it's better to lose a bit of pride than to lose your whole life.

Good God, man! You are not "selling your soul." That's just making it black & white, when there are also shades of gray. Come on! Of course you need to take any steps necessary to get medical assistance as needed. *** From a Christian perspective (mine), helping anyone who has any need is sacred. It's a duty. It could be you today. It could be me tomorrow. Of course we each take responsibility for our lives and 99% live only by what we can produce. But there are circumstances...when it's nice and comforting to know that when in need, your fellow humans actually can and will do something to help. I am sure you have already helped people throughout your life. Please request assistance! ***I might add that you're not requesting some fancy assistance, but medicine you need.

Hi Nutbag; I am of the opinion if you have paid taxes throughout your life, the government has gotten their fair share, and you deserve the right to apply for assistance if you qualify. Thus I would not consider it selling your soul to the gov't.

Also, with all my heart, I hope you are feeling better soon!! !!

Your life is the number one priority here.
You have clearly worked hard to be independent all your life.
You deserve to get the help you need so you can continue to live your life.

Sign up just for medical assistance if need be. Alot of people are unable to pay for medicine and can't keep their head above water because of medical bills, there is NO shame in it.

Medical assistance is normally not the same as signing up for full assistance...find out. You're not selling your soul to the gov, and you can get help so that you can live better.

They have taxed you in many hidden ways all of your life, the State has lived off of you, and what little We The People, get is owed.

Retire, or at least apply, you have enough health problems, and "To get what is just, you must ask for more."

As long as it puts you in position of keeping them working, if you want medicine, ask for medical retirement.

We do need you around.

Nutbag, philosophically I am pretty much in agreement with you. Since the Federal and state governments have not shown any respect for your beliefs & desires but have taken your money anyway then I suggest you get what you can. Your presence is appreciated on this board, don't die of a treatable condition. :)

BTW I have asthma myself it sucks. Mine is usually not a big deal but it can be.

Signing up for state sponsered medical insurance is not living off the govt for goodness sake! If you have paid taxes you have more than earned some assistance from the govt. Living off the govt is only if you get SSI and when you could work. Since you do work and own your own business you aren't selling your soul to the govt.

By the way if your asthma is bad rescue inhalers is not what you need to treat it! You need a daily asthma medication until you can get airway inflammation under control. That might be in the form of pills such as Singulair and Zyrtec not inhalers. You may also have a longstanding respiratory infection so you may need antibiotics too. There are articles coming out that asthma can be cured after one month on antibiotics because it is often caused by mycoplasms.

By the way you really should just march into Voc Rehab and tell them your situation. Your taxes and your parents taxes have already paid for the assistance you will get there. They help disabled people. That is their job. If they run out of disabled people to help then they have no job. Use their service; its there for a reason. They can help you with the Aspergers as well as the arthritis and asthma. They can also help you with job skills training should you want it. They usually give 3-6 months of service; its not a forever thing so don't feel like you are burdening them. See Barb at Voc and she will listen to you; she is a real sweety. Everyone there is exceptionally kind and has given me a renewed faith in humankind since I discovered there are a few people in the world that really do care about others.

If a bunch of criminals with guns were outside your house getting ready to break the door down, would you be selling your soul if you called the cops?

If fire was spreading through your house and you were trapped inside, would you be selling your soul if you called the fire department?

There's a difference in intensity, but no difference in kind.
