There are other people like me in the world, who are miserable, and lonely, and feel as though people should care, but know no one does. And all these lonely miserable people are forgotten, usually not even remembered in the first place. That's why I have to do what I'm going to do. I need to be remembered. I need people to know what I was like, and that I was not alone.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure Ted Bundy isn't remembered for giving rides to hitchhikers.
