The Christmas carol "O Tannenbaum"/"O Christmas Tree" shares its melody with the state songs of four states: Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, and New Jersey.

The prophet Jeremiah warned the Israelites not to follow the pagan tradition of cutting a tree and decorating it .

Jer 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Oh, the irony!!

Jer 10:2
This is what the Lord says: "Do not act like other nations, who try to read their future in the stars. Do not be afraid of their predicitions, even though other nations are terrified by them.
3 Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.
4 They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won't fall over.
5 Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field! They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you or do you any good."

This passage is actually talking about carving idols from wood and fortune telling. So if people pray to their Christmas tree as a god (or idolize it in some way), then you're right. Most people don't take the tree so seriously. People should celebrate with the right reason in mind though.
