Maybe sharpen your hooks a little more? can pick a hook sharpener up on the cheap and as you will probably know, keep the line tight at all times, never allow any slack if you can, fix your spool before you go out.. ie hang weights off the spool and adjust spool till its a few pounds below breaking strain, ... What pound test line are you using? ( apologies as im sure you know all of this, just not wanting to assume

)
Also is your lure a single hook, double or treble hook?
I've never heard of a hook sharpner. I think my hooks are pretty sharp. When they don't feel sharp anymore, I change them with new ones, or "down grade" the lures to cod and mackerel, as they have softer tissue in there mouths. I've never heard about using weights to adjust spool either? Do you mean adjusting the brake? I do that while fishing, as it depends on the size of the fish. Pound test line, what's that?
I always use treble hooks. I know for a fact my rod is not a good choice. It's a telescope type. It's so practical to use though.
