I have been thinking about this because I watched Cosmic Collisions last night a couple of times on discovery. It could be the Apophis meteor in a couple dozen years or some other as yet discovered meteor. The Yosemite supervolcano could blow at any time. Some people think that in 2012 a bunch of things are supposed to happen, like radiation bursts from the sun that could trigger the volcano. It could be a gamma radiation burst from a collapsing star or colliding neutron stars. The sun is apparently going to boil all the water off of earth in a billion years or so, so that is about our time limit anyway. It could be manmade damage like nuclear war or global warming (if you think that's a man-made phenomenon). I'd like to think the earth will make the alotted time we have with the sun's lifespan being what it is but it will suprise me. Does anyone think we will have the technology to colonize other planets before this happens?

I reckon when the Sun implodes on itself.

I think we'll produce AI/robots that will wipe us out off the face of the planet.

I think either a Nuclear war or global warming (it will happen sooner or later, before the sun implodes anyway) will kill us.

I think humanity will expand into the Universe before Earth becomes unliveable. It will start with a Mars terraforming project.

A massive cosmic impact or strike. Ultimately, it could explode and become another sun.

that's something i didn't account for.I can certainly see it happening. Or something could go horribly wrong with nanotechnology.

Collision with a large astronomical object, like the comet/meteor/asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

The sun will not implode. It will expand into a red giant and that will finish off the earth. It will diminish after its outer layers are blown off and become a white dwarf.

No way. The earth does not have enough mass to crunch its matter and cause a fusion reaction.

Yes way. We're not talking about the end of mankind but the end of the world/earth itself some mega trillion light years from now. We don't have mega volcanic eruptions for nothing. It's a possible evolutionary conclusion. The earth could ultimately become a sun or star.

I choose not to think about it. If I'm alive at the time, I'd like to be taken by surprise!

I don't know, but hopefully the whole thing will be dramatized on the Galactic Discovery Channel, for other worlds to see, with lots of spooky, dramatic music, and shaky, hand-held camera work.
