Did anyone see the Perseid meteor shower last night? I saw about 12 over the period of an hour, but it's due to peak tonight, so there should be more. If it's a clear sky, the display is well worth sitting in the garden and giving yourself a stiff neck. :)

Quote:
How to catch the falling stars

THE PERSEIDS will be visible on clear nights from about August 10 to August 15, peaking on August 13. For the best views, avoid smog, cloud and light pollution. The second half of the night, between midnight and dawn, should provide the best of the action, with two or three meteors visible every minute. The meteors will appear to radiate from a single point in the sky – the constellation of Perseus – well above the horizon, towards the northeast.

Ahhh damn, im at work, i get breaks but the parkinglot has bright lights, i always hated light pollution, never understood why we need all of those lights. Thats whats nice about the Adirondacks, its one of the darkest places on Earth, everytime I go their I have to look up, I see sooo many more start their then where I live 2 hours away from the southern blue line in NY. The edge of our galaxie was soo breath taking one night, while looking up in my little boat, in the middle of a nice isolated lake, eveyone in my camp site was asleep, and so i went out alone, fully awair of the dangers, but once i got away from the canopy, and saw the clear, cold sky above, I was astonished, very luck to be able to see this site, when sooo many go their whole loves without .

I saw one quite spectacular one last night. If it's clear, I'm going to find a darker spot and check it out again tonight.

On a related note, on my first date with my wife, we went out to sit on the beach late in the evening and had the most amazing display of shooting stars that I have ever seen. Fantastic - you couldn't buy romance like that! I still tell her that I had it laid on specially LOL

Light pollution is a huge problem. Even where I live which is rural, the house at the back has a security light that usually pops on and off all night if its windy. Luckily it didn't last night. I love it when I can see the Milky Way, but it isn't usually dark enough where I live to see it, because of the street lights. The Adirondacks sound like a brilliant place for star-gazing.

I was very aware of it happening, but I forgot and I had no clue where I could go view from that was dark and safe around here.

Yeah i had that dilemma, weighing up the light-pollution/risk-of-being-mugged ratio.

I could see the area around orion quite well last night, but nothing unusual whatsoever. Does anyone know what area they appear in - is it near any particular lay-person constellations? Its probably going to be cloudy again, but id like go out again if a clear patch happens to appear & i knew it was in roughly the right part of space.

This isn't a very good map, but it shows a few of the nearby constellations. Cassiopeia appears above Perseus in the sky, if that's any help. Cassiopeia is like a W shape, a quite bright so you might be able to spot it by finding that and then going down towards the horizon a bit. But meteors appear anywhere in that general direction, so it doesn't really matter if you can't find Perseus, you should see some meteors anyway if you look in the general direction of north east.

Graelwyn, if you have a window facing NE you might see some without going outside, provided there's not too much light outside where you are.

I hope the sky is clear though, it's clouding up here :(

thanks Starr :)

I think if your area has the pure orange street-lamps as used in quiet/low-crime areas, they pollute a lot less and are regarded by astronomers as much less of an issue.

Sadly I forgot to look last night - I'd taken work home (more fool me  ) and I lost all sense of normality :(

I saw one last night!! :o I went out to have a look around quarter to two am and as soon as i looked up i saw one shooting across the sky. Then i stayed out trying to see more, but did not see anymore. The mosquitoes started to bite and i heard some rustling in the bushes that scared me so i went back inside.
