Not really - just playing around with an air-pistol shooting tin cans and the like.
I was pretty accurate though!

Would you be able to change (say) the video card in your PC if it failed, and get it properly configured?

Nope.

I am able to change out a video board, however the other issue is that you need to have a power supply able to handle the load of the video board and - if the video board is a high enough wattage - make sure that there are matching power connectors between the video board and the power supply directly. As for configuring it, such as installing the device drivers, I can do that... sort of. There's more I need to learn though. I'm studying for the A+ computer repair certification at present though.

Have you ever destroyed a machine accidentally while taking it apart and trying to determine how it works?

Yes, quite easily, but it's not something I make a hobby of.

Do you have perfect pitch?

Never a computer, but I did once as a child when I pulled apart my great-grandfather's solid gold Hunter pocket watch.
Completely buggered it.

Do you enjoy studying mechanics in action? Gear trains in watches etc.

I tinkered around with Autocad 3ds for a while but never really produced much worthwhile. Likewise with TurboCad.
CAD software is fun though!

OSS or proprietary?

Ooh - hardcore!
I started with Redhat v4.<mumble> and stayed with that until it got silly around v8, then moved to SUSE v7 - and dropped that when they sold out to Novell under the MS threats. Currently poking about with KUbuntu but as that too is getting a bit silly (ie. being bent more towards looking/behaving like that other OS) I might move to Debian (KUbuntu minus the extra fluff) or Slackware. Maybe even FreeBSD, if I can motivate myself enough to look into it.

Not really, just set in my ways.

I started my professional career with BSD 4.2 and 4.3. I moved to SunOS 3 and 4. Felt kind of homeless when SunOS became Solaris and became Sys V-based. Experimented for a few years with a lot of different things, until I discovered FreeBSD.

No question, so I'll just ask a new one.

Describe your first computer.

I had one of those Macs where the monitor and tower were one unit. That's all I remember about it. I only used it to type school papers, no internet then.

Are you at all concerned that this thread has recently been conducted in Greek?

A home-brew Motorola 6800 system. I forget how much RAM (it certainly wasn't much) and this was well before hard disks were easily available. Or floppy disk drives, come to that.

 Nah. It's my second language - but the one which comes most naturally to me.

Would you be frightened or spooked if in a graveyard at night?
