Same here!

I enjoy seeing Flint or Detroit or maybe some parts of Oakland, CA on Google Maps...

i watch 3 hour (or even longer) journeys in google earth after i set them up.

eg: i place a marker at a point like a road in melbourne, and another marker at my house in sydney, and then i click "directions from" and i choose the melbourne marker, and then i click "directions to" and i choose the marker at my house.

then it calculates the route within a second or 2 and i have the option of touring that route.
i go to the navigation page and choose my tour height to be 300 meters at an angle of 65 degrees (viewpoint) , and i choose the speed to be 1000 mph.

then i go and deselect the route display (turn off the purple trace over the roads), and i play the tour at 1000 mph.
it is mesmeric to watch for hours.

I didn't know it was possible to do all that. It sounds interesting, so perhaps I'll try it. Thanks for posting how to do it. :)

As an old geography nerd, I love Google Maps. My biggest quibble with it, though, is that there is no close-up shot of the South Pole, particularly the nearby Scott-Amundsen Station...an on-again, off-again obsession of mine. It's weird, I know; there probably aren't any close-up satellite photos to use.

i have only been on google maps a couple of times to check it out when i first heard of it. it's good for finding unfamiliar places... but i don't particularly use it.
i have however just discovered google sky maps and have been browsing through constellations and galaxies all evening (:
