I don't know if I liked Cox better, but just in general I thought Manhunter was the better movie.

I think the thing I disliked the most about the remake (let's not kid ourselves, some of the scenes were lifted straight from the previous movie) is that they added a bunch of Lector scenes for no reason other than to give Hopkins more screen time. I thought they made Graham look too much like he didn't know what he was doing, like he was just riding Lector the whole time.

I did really, really like Hoffman as Lounds though, that was spot-on perfect.

I preferred William Petersen as Wil Graham in Manhunter. For me he really WAS the movie. Lecter's part was quite minor.

There is an interesting splice job on YouTube for one of the Manhunter cell scenes with Hopkinns as Lecter and Petersen as Wil Graham.

I know I saw Manhunter many years ago. I also read The Red Dragon. I think since I saw the movie many years before reading the book it did not occur to me they were the same story. I must have seen the movie when I was fairly young.

I can't imagine anyone being Lecter other than Anthony Hopkins. There is an actor playing the part of "Mr Jones", I believe, in the show "Fringe" who mimics Hopkins' Lector character very well at times. If someone else had to play Hannibal Lector, that guy would be a fair approximation, but certainly not as great. Long live Anthony Hopkins!! !!

And I do realize now that my quote in this thread was not appropriate as it was from Jaime Gum, aka "Buffalo Bill" and not Lector, but I so so love that line!

Which did you like more? Manhunter or Red Dragon. I preferred Manhunter. I thought Brian Cox did Hannibal Lecktor very well.

That too. I didn't get to read the book until after I had seen Manhunter a few times, and I was picturing Petersen the whole time, it was perfect.

No offense to Norton, I usually think he's great, but in Red Dragon it felt like he was just reading off of cue cards the whole time.

well i just watched one of the films again, and something i noticed, maybe its just me but do they seem fairly homophobic?

anyone know if the books are like this? i havent read them yet.

I don't know about homophobic, but Silence of the Lambs in particular deals with men who are cross dressers. They toned it down a lot in the movie, for obvious reasons. I could go into details about how Jame Gumb isn't actually gay, but really wants to be...but it would kind of spoil it a little.

Now that I think about it, there was that one part in Red Dragon. They were profiling the killer, and mentioned how he would keep the shorts on the male victim, so they wouldn't think he was gay (something like that), so when Graham did the Tattler interview with Lounds, he intentionally mentioned that the killer was probably gay, so that he'd get pissed off and come after Graham.

Hmm...I can't think of any other parts...it's been a while since I read them last, though.

Paul Krendler didn't seem to have a particularly high opinion of the gay community, judging by his suggestion to Clarice that Lecter might be gay because of all the 'artsy fartsy stuff' (read intellectual) that Lecter was 'into'.

I think this is more to do with being a brainwashed 'G' man than being afraid of gay people.

Before the movie 'Hannibal Rising', Lecter seemed somewhat asexual, if anything, although he seems to have a very vivid sexual imagination and (as evidenced when Lecter gives Mason Verger a 'poppa' during Verger's simulated hanging scene and Verger's unfortuanate 'shaving accident) seems he enjoys watching :!:

Lecter's comment about Benjamin Raspail being garden variety manic depressive, rather than gay, suggests an intellectual level of understanding without any prejudice :?:
