The class was informally polled on how many people know the meaning of WTF, and surprisingly enough, most people do ot know what it means. Maybe they lied. I dunno.

It's not the opposite meaning at all. 'WTF' is an expression of surprise and shock, not of disapproval, on it's own it's a neutral statement. Whereas 'FTW', in it's most common meaning, is a positive statement.
WTF could be a negative statement, though. I've seen it being used as an expression of disapproval.
