My first name is an old Scots word for "guardian", which would explain why it's very close to an English word meaning manager or attendant.

My second name is a Saxon name meaning "vigilant" which, although my parents claim they didn't know this, ties in with "guardian" perfectly.

All I know of my surname is that it's the name of a river in Scotland.

My real name is Gwen, which is Celtic in origin and means "white". It is usually combined as Gwendolyn or Gwenneth. The "Gwen" part is actually a prefix.

I just realised that the names Fiona and Gwen are cognates to each other. They come from different Celtic languages, and both as stated mean 'white' or 'fair'.

Fiona from the Scottish Gaelic fion.

Gwen from the Welsh gwyn.

I wasn't aware of the cognates either. I think it is interesting. My maiden name was Hardie and my ancestors are from Scotland on my father's side. With my name actually having Welsh origin, I guess my mom came close in keeping things "co-ordinated", but I don't think that it was deliberate.

I can't remember how reliably I heard this...but without disputing its Welsh origin, isn't it also a contraction of Guinevere, from which the name "Jennifer" is derived?

My real name as if you don't already know is Joshua and I just looked it up. It's from the Hebrew name which is (Yehoshu'a) That meant YAHWEH is salvation. I didn't know that Joshua was a variant name of Jesus or the other way around.

When I posted about the Fiona/Gwen cognates I forgot all about Jennifer also being connected. Because Jennifer is also in parallel with Fiona/Gwen, being of Cornish origin, the Cornish version of Guinevere.

So yes, seems like I do know a lot about names. It's the linguistic etymology that captures me.

Yonae means "love-match" or "love-marriage" and is Korean in origin.
