IE is prone via Active X controls - something that ONLY IE HAS. which is IEs fault, surely?

IE is part of windows (IE system explorer), so whatever happens in IE, happens to the system.

Your logic is flawed because it is based on the assumption that Active X is insecure or unnecessary or in some way evil. That assumption is wrong.

Our entire business relies on ActiveX controls.

They do not install automatically, despite the popular opinion. In fact, with IE7 and IE8 it is pretty damn hard to get an ActiveX control installed even if you wanted to.

Default security settings of Vista and Win 7 would prevent all this crap. All you need to do to keep your computer safe is: NOTHING. Just don't mess with things you don't understand.

Install a vulnerable 3rd party app such as Flash or Acrobat, or mess with IE settings, or turn off updates because they annoy you, or turn off UAC because it annoys you, and presto you get a virus.

I've just had a bad experience with everything windows related.

heck, i use Ubuntu Linux & Mac with Firefox with NS & ABP :D

every virus i ever got was thru IE. IE is part of the system, unlike firefox.

Active X is unnessary. if it wasnt then why do Safari, FF, Chrome etc not have it?
Opera is way better than IE - you can make it emulate IE without Active X. problem solved.

IE8 is not rubbish. It's a perfectly serviceable web browser. There are good reasons (like blocking ads and improved security) to choose Firefox or Chrome in preference to Internet Explorer, but IE itself is not bad. Chrome is the most secure web browser AFAIK if you aren't concerned by it being a Google creation. Chrome also does well on the Acid website compatibility test, but that doesn't bear out my experience of using it - I've run into several sites which Chrome has problems with.

I haven't used Opera recently so can't comment. I don't like Safari, but that's more 'cause I just don't like the UI.

Internet Explorer in any shape or form is bad. Always has been, always will be.

You don't need IE to run Windows Media Player if you have the program itself on your computer.

Evidence please? Tell me why you think so other than "I just do".

number of viruses, worms, trojans, bots, scareware etc thru IE: f*** too many to count. ive lost my data at least 7 times over 2 years thanks to IE(and that was with McAfee installed & up to date - fortunately it was just music i could rip again). None required any interaction from me (ie clicking install). the bogus virus scanner even looks like windows explorer.

number thru firefox: nil. i would be required to download an "install.exe" or "playmovie.wmv.exe" or "script.js" or whatever which u just cancel - which IE automatically installs/runs :? firefox warns u about the site it knows to be infected, NS also blocks any crappy scripts from running. ABP stops flash embed from running.

a security bug is found in firefox - it is fixed within days, hours even. a security bug is found in IE - Microsoft bury it under the rug for 3 months b4 issuing a press release trying to cover it up.

btw, iTunes, Roxio etc burn CDs just like WMP.

out of the box: IE - NO NO. High security option hampers usefulness as a browser & increases hassle when trying to do stuff.

out of the box: FF/Opera - YAY! No crapware

Does anyone here happen to know why I occasionally get this error?

Image

After clicking "Okay" I get a blank page, but then "refresh" brings WP back just fine.
