I think it's a way of hugging without touching naughty bits (naughty although clothed). I prefer full frontal bear hugs with people I really like. Nothing sexual about it. Rarely happens.

I recall a 'Christian' rock band, from the 80z, where the lead singer wore a 'cod-piece' and ONLY a 'cod-piece' when he performed on stage :!:
