Cant stand the holidays

I can't stand Christmas now. Everyone in my house seems to have the whole duration off work, just to sit around looking at eachother. And you know what depresses me the most? Oh, the telly on from the minute my dad gets up, to the minute he goes to bed (so practially all day long), and nothing is even on the telly, just the same old crap from last year, and the house is a mess, and I won't be having family round this Christmas because my family are doing other things. It's going to be terrible. And it'd be snowy and icy so I won't be able to get the bus and go to my volunteer job, and there ain't much else to do in my town, and I just think the government should shorten the Christmas holidays a bit. I think all firms should close just for Christmas day, Boxing day, and new year's day, and they should allow people who have small children to have the time off to be with their children, but otherwise most people without small children would rather be out working because the Christmas season is nothing but eating, drinking and watching boring telly for days and days.
Sundays for me are a struggle with knowing what to do with myself, let alone 2 weeks solid of it. I can't stand hearing chattering from the telly when I'm in my room - which I'm always going to be hearing because people are in and out and won't learn to shut the doors behind them. It's nice to be with family, but why so many days?

i worked ten and a half hours on thanksgiving, i plan to work 16 on christmas. maybe ill pull a 7a-11p shift and avoid all the "gathering" business

I hate the holidays as well. I went to visit the family on Thanksgiving and was treated like crap. Luckily for Christmas this year I'm going to be on vacation in Florida where the family members who hate me can't touch me.

Yeah, that pretty much sums me up too. My family knows what I'm like - that I will over-examine things so completely that thoughtless gestures just done to maintain the status quo in the "spirit of the holiday" so trying to make me into a normal person is kind of pointless. I reckon don't try to fit in. If it's not your cup of tea, just do your own thing.
But Christmas - I don't especially want to start an anthropological debate, but it's more than convenient that the ancient Pagan seasonal festival of Yule falls directly at that same time. The Christian myth doesn't have much historical support. Not wanting to step on any Aspie-Christian toes, you can believe what you want - just pointing out an alternate point of view.
I hate the holidays. I just don't understand the point.

Holidays are filled with dysfunction in our family
It used to start with 2 weeks before christmas, my dad would anounce there would be no Christmas...all of us would cry. But somehow he would pull a rabbit out of his finacial hat (credit cards) and would give us more than we ever needed. Then there was the family games, not talking horse shoes here, more like our family disfunction played out to the max. Well this will be the 3rd Christmas without my father, it feels so scattered and somehow I am sure someone will have to start the drama in honor of him. My family will be together for christmas for the 1st time since my father died (because we moved and they did too), so I am nervous about what to expect. Usually if I say something inteligent then my brother or sister have to be sure to hammer that urge out of me. God forbid anything I have anything to say with any merit.
Well on the other hand, I love making presents for people because it is soo much fun and a great excuse to go all out on art supplies.
My sister and I usually give each other the best gifts...in some weird way, it feels like a compitition. I cant make electronics so trying to make something for my brother can be hard.
My mom is a eternal mother and anything I give her even if I chewed it up and rolled it in ball would make her happy. The rest of my extended family, I usually make them my crabapple jelly and knit them some washrags usually will suffice.
My aunt and I have a knitting thing going on...I knit something for her and she crochet something for me.

As far as saying thank you...even if you dont like it...put a big smile on your face and say
Thank you soooo much. Usaully works for me. I took drama in high school and that helps in times like when someone gives me a pink furry coat or something like that.

But as far as boycotting Christmas...if you really dont like it...go for it, but I love to make stuff for folks so that is why I play the game.

Understood. I as a Christian do realize that the time knows as "Christmas" began as a pagan solstice festival. There is much debate over whether Jesus was born on December 25th, many scholars and theologians believe is was closer to april.

I believe that in the past 25 years or so, paganism (of a different sort) has reclaimed this season and made it about who has the best toys, the best cars and so on.

Basically, whoever qualifies for the best platinum credit card gets to have the best Christmas.

There is nothing Christian about what goes on on black friday at walmart.
