A lot of the things you mention don't exist anymore. Most chavs aren't nice people at all, though - a lot are petty criminals and would hurt you/hurl abuse at you as soon as look at you.

Described on Wiktionary as:

"British, derogatory, informal) A working-class youth: especially as associated with aggression, poor education, and a perceived ‘common’ taste in clothing and lifestyle."

It's not really about being working class, though. It's about being nasty little s**ts who drive their crap cars recklessly and give people hassle.

What's the word origin?

One theory is it derives from the romany word for child, though an amusing backronym has it as standing for Council Housed And Violent. :P

I'm just a little old for my age. People tell me that I'm living in the 50s and 60s. That's also true, what they say about me. At least I have the Internet to remind me that it's 2006.

I couldn't generalise England based on that. It would just put me off Nottingham, that's all. :D

I've never been to Nottingham, but it's known for having relatively high levels of crime and violence. That said, I shouldn't judge the city unless/until I've been.

I like how they drive on the Left side of the road, instead of the Right. I've been walking down the Left sidewalk my whole life, because I like the British Left, so much.
