I thing "frag" is a big understatement. Even a small Meteor could at least heavily concuss (assuming it's a meteorite) someone, and a big one, like Meteor if FFVII, well, "frag" would have to be repleaced by "mega-super-hydrogen-bombed".

I remember a thread on a nerd news in which a guy calculated the energy a Death
Star laser would need to destroy an earth like plant. The numbers were based on energy
to accelerate the explode parts of the planet beyound earth gravity.

I got thinking knowing we will be destroyed in 2017 that there numbers must be wrong.

If you burn a small hole to the outer core that is molten Iron and Nickel. It would
rise and on contact with sea water explosively release hydrogen that would deplete all
the oxygen destroy the complete surface and then as more and more hot metal on water contact you will get the energy to destroy the entire world. The laser would have
to keep lasering the same hole to keep its flow going.
