Meh. Large caliber small arms look great on TV and sound great when discussed. But they are utterly impractical for civilians, or anyone really other than special forces.

I had a .50 and it was obscene. It was so loud that people got fed up with me at the range and they'd leave. It was expensive to shoot. My face got hit by a concussion and heat wave every time I pulled the trigger. The action got rough after a dozen shots due to extreme overheating. Etc....

I wouldn't go bigger than .338 Lapua.

Nowadays I crave myself an SR-25 in 7.62x51, with a Leupold scope.

It's fun knowing that you can put a hole through 30-40mm of armor plating (not just steel).

If you live in the middle of nowhere, there's no need to bother people at a range with the noise and blast; plinking wrecked cars out to a kilometer or so is a lot of fun. Firing less than a few is also more than enough for fun. But then, I'm the type of person who'd buy a [Norinco knockoff of a] RPG-7 + rounds and shoot up cars too in the middle of nowhere [if it were legal], for fun.

I'm not wealthy enough to get a PTRD [or something similar like a Boys] though, but that's ok.

Rent it then. Or hang out with a buddy who has one. Large caliber is fun the first few times you go out. The novelty quickly wears out. After about 2 years I went back to the shop and traded my .50 for other more practical toys. Took a $350 loss of course.

I speak from personal experience. Save your pennies and buy an AR or a Rem 700.

I'm actually not interested in modern anti-material stuff to own, rather the collectible anti-tank rifles (I'll always shoot a military surplus firearm now and again, as a weapon that doesn't work isn't a weapon). The price is similar though, I mean the big name anti-material rifles in comparison to the collectible surplus stuff (a Steyr HS versus a Boys .55 for example).

I'm fine regarding small and medium caliber stuff.

I'm a fan of old anti-tank stuff. It's powerful, yes, impractical for anything but fun when shooting, yes, but they're collectible and just way cool.
