That's a hard question for me to answer. I guess that there wouldn't be any telephone companies if there weren't any NTs.

One good trait is knowing what to say and do in an emotional situation without feeling awkward. (comforting friends, knowing what to say, etc.)

I have to hark back to the colorful language, what about poetry? Figurative speech.

And would that include poetry that is in lyrics for songs?

"While my guitar gently weeps" Harrison.
"And said, little boy, gonna make you a man." The Kinks, lola.

But this is such a hard thing to determine. We can't really say that poetry is something NT.

I've thought about this all day.

Yes, the more I think about it, the more it seems to be a kind of grey area, as the distinctions vary so much in individuals.
Poetry is something that requires a capacity for introspection to my mind, so, again it's about individuals.

another impressive trait they have:

they don't care about people lying all the time.

And it's inaccurate.
When an Aspie decides to take up lying, it's incessant.
(And nobody is ok about being lied to.)

Thanks thinktrees.

I like humility. I like the ability to be mature to appologogize and the ability to admit you were wrong. These are human characteristics that are not exclussive to NT or AS.

I also like the ability to forgive.

Edit: Cats are superior. mine is at least

Kinda picked this up late.. Maybe

Just wanted to pick up on this, but in a nice way ;)
I think NTs could potentially communicate better but I would suggest that many are not nearly as aware of their alleged abilities as they should be to take advantage of it consciously.. And then, again generalising here, it seems an NT can still get somewhat caught up in language.. But when I communicate with people it's me being over literal, so I couldn't say how an NT might perceive or experience it.. however, I have noticed that regular folk I speak to seem just less concerned and interested in being understood particularly well or understand others etc
Generally, it seems to me that typical NT communication is less conscious.. At least in a certain sense.
That's my theory for this morning anyways. :)

So, NTs are more relaxed in their communications generally perhaps.

Well I'd hesitate to say relaxed as that would imply to me at least that those who weren't relaxed were anxious. And that might be just it, I don't know, but I would guess there's a lot more than anxiety going on.. Like they say "wired differently", I think the neurological differences would be the fundamental difference, with anxiety being variable and able to be pretty much fully overcome.. Also I would think that while an aspie could have anxiety disorders etc that contribute to communicative problems I would guess they'd be more likely symptomatic of preexisting communicative problems than the initial cause.

I am terrible with navigating those.

It would be a good ability to have. Because most emotions do not translate to words for me.

Yes, that's most definitely a good trait.

Well, it's not really a trait, but many NTs have a good level of self-confidence. Sometimes I am not sure about that, but having some confidence would have gotten me much further in life.

Wow! that's really hurtfull. I'm NT.

One thing I have heard many times in my life though is that the world is "bad" and I have heard many jokes on people who are naive.

One of my flatmates once described someone as "naive", but it seemed to me she equalled it with "stupid". I have been naive all my life...

Someone who is naive does not lie. Not really. Many people perceive me as a "good" and "nice" person. It's really a misconception.

So, considering how often people are made fun of because they cannot perceive certain things and that people who do not lie are often described as naive and... what's the word... gullible...

Maybe there's a bit of truth about that statement. Maybe it's not that people do not "care" about people lying all the time. But it's accepted. Because it's "common sense". I hate common sense. ^^ Because people just are not "perfect".

I think you hit the nail on the head. We're less conscious of communication as we mostly do it automatically in real time. So we might say something illogical, misuse a word, mispronounce something, fail to state a reference for what we're saying, forget some detail.... but we'll gloss over that as unimportant because we're focussed on some general main point, which might not even be about the words themselves. I've noticed my Aspie friends get derailed in a conversation if they forget a detail, interrupt to discuss use of a word, question my logic etc. I have certain Aspie friends that make me feel like I need to choose my words very CAREFULLY. If I'm in a sensitive mood, the conversation can sometimes feel like I'm defending a thesis at college whereas conversation with NT friends can sometimes feel like the equivalant of reading those trashy magazines like People.

Sometimes in a conversation with an Aspie I get they don't see the forest for the trees (though sometimes I really enjoy this ability). An example, on my birthday, an Aspie friend discussed the date of my birthday with me, the significance of it but never wished me happy birthday, asked how I was spending the day etc. While I understood where he was coming from, I still felt rather hurt as I was feeling a bit sensitive on my birthday. Having said of all this, I actually prefer conversations with my Aspie friends to my NT friends.

Thanks, nomadder was interesting reading your take on it.
Currently a bit overloaded so am struggling to think of anything to add
Will have to keep up with this thread though. Good stuff:)

no need for that...

it is a skill that is required! it is seen as normal development! it is simply neurotypical!

Not a very likeable normality..to have to be good at dishonesty in order to be a success.

That naivete, and the gullibility, I very much relate to.
For better or worse. But as much as it is not respected by the big noisy successful world out there, I respect it very much when I see it in others, and value it as a kind of natural, innate morality. I think it's valid as such. Why not respect a person/being who is naturally of a gentler disposition..

So, I guess that as much as an Aspie may be very highly focussed, the ability to follow a conversation through to it's end point without fussing over grammatical points, word choices, variations in philosophical bent, and logical pathways,..not to mention being distracted by noises, lights, patterns, & other environmentals...would be a very good ability to have 8)
