I'm something of a mouse-catching expert unfortunately. (I say unfortunately because I love animals, and hate killing them. :()

The best traps are the plastic snap-traps with "teeth," they look like alligator or t-rex heads. The brand I use is called "the better mousetrap." These cost a little more than the old-fashioned wire kind but are easier to setup and less likely to get set off by accident, in my experience.

It is important to be aggressive and set multiple traps until all mice are caught.

It is also very important to have a clean home so that mice are not attracted in the first place. :)

Rodents can carry disease. Hantavirus from inhaling dried up feces is scary, but mostly limited to the southwest. I wouldn't use poison for fear one of your pets might consume the dead animal. I think traps are probably the most humane choice. When I did some work on a horse farm, they literally had a swarm of mice living off the feed. I think they did some sort of drowning trap which was effective, but far from humane.
