A troll is an ancient creature of folklore that will turn to stone if exposed to the sun. Internet trolls are usually young but they don't fare well either if they're exposed to the light of day. Neither troll is assumed to be very bright.
Nor is either troll known for their courage. Trolls in folklore had a knack for picking on those smaller and weaker than themselves, internet trolls only dare lip off when they can hide.

A random user who pops up out of nowhere and deliberately gives bad advice or poorly written insults. In other words, they're the attention seekers of the Internet.

Extensive as that is, it doesn't cover trolling very well. Only the hateful and harassing seem directly relevant..

This definition of cyberbullying seems to come closer to operationally defining troll behaviour.

The actions are deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior intended to harm another. Cyberbullying has been defined by The National Crime Prevention Council"

(Unfortunately attempts to "put down" someone else features very regularly on WP, however as the old saying goes, one swallow doesn't make a summer...)

Not so sure trolling is always that terribly malicious though...I think some trolling can fall under the catagory of cyber-bullying but I think trolling is much more broad and not as specified as that.

That's really important point Chagya. Yes indeed. The first type is even more toxic, because the motive to actively cause mental damage to another is the driving force. It's a form of gaslighting, and narcissists (the NPD kind particularly) specialise in this. It is ugly. Some trolls are both, and switch between the two types.

I thought it was a good thing to try and get people to question their own beliefs, I'd have to disagree and say trolling with that intent is better than with a malicious intent meant to harm someone. So yeah I'd think the second one is more toxic....the first one maybe just wants to see what they can stir up but not so much with a desire to harm anyone.

I'd like a troll in the traditional sense...I doubt anyone in public would give me any crap if I had a large troll with me lol.

We've been dealing with a self admitted troll on one of my forums. He says he posts stuff in hopes of making people he considers weak, cry, whine, get upset etc. He gets a thrill out of causing what he calls "butthurt".
