I agree from your comments there that the view counter could often be reporting double the actual views. I guess it's not unheard of for a bug to manifest itself in a non-uniform way like that.
I don't think you need worry about not having a life though. It would be more worrying if nobody was interested in your findings.
I'm sure I remember a time when the average ratio of the number of views of threads on WP to the number of replies was about 20 to 1. That seems to have increased.
Personally, I think I post on about half the threads I actually read, until I've posted, and then I follow the thread and probably post there less than half the times I read it. I don't usually look at a new thread at all unless the title seems interesting, and most of the time the content doesn't disappoint me, and when I'm interested, I like to wade in with my views, though sometimes I decide after writing it that it's not worth posting, so I don't. But all things considered, if everybody were like me and the counter worked properly, the overall read : post ratio wouldn't be so high.
I think somebody suggested once that a lot of the reads could be from spybots.
