There are billion Moslems in the world. There maybe Muslim clerics who forbid chess in corners of the far flung Muslim world, just like there are Christian congregations who practice snake handling.

But I have never heard of chess prohibition being a long standing intrinsic thing associated with Islam the way that pork prohibition and alcohol prohibition is. So being amazed that Muslims play chess is kinda like being amazed that the Pope has never done any snake handling.

I'm back with more interesting information about modern Muslims.

1) Although Islam is usually associated with Arabs and African descendants, a growing number of people in the US with Latin American roots have embraced Islam over the years.

2) Many South Asians in New York City have also become Muslims fairly recently.

3) Modern music genres with Islamic influence include hip-hop, Sufi rock and taqwacore.

4) Muslims have had a long history of being allies of the US during various wars.

Your point number four is TWO kinds of stupid.

One: the article does NOT say what you say it says. Its about ethnic Indians in New York. You are saying that it says that "many" of the said group have "recently BECOME Muslim". NOWHERE in the Wiki article does it say that. Or I cant find a sentence that says that.

TWO: Why would immigrants from South Asia even have to BECOME Muslim AFTER they get here to America? A big chunk of the South Asian population is Muslim to begin with. So logically you would expect many South Asian immigrants to New Yorker to already be Muslim when they get here. And that is in fact the case, and that is exactly what the Wiki article says is the case. Not what you're claiming: that immigrants come to the US from India, and then BECOME Muslim AFTER they get here in America!.

The Indian Subcontinent (ie "South Asia") consists mainly of three main countries: Pakistan (Muslim majority), Bangladesh (Muslim majority), and India (majority Hindu, but the Muslim minority of that country is a bigger population than the ENTIRE population of most Muslim majority countries in the world). So a person with common sense would EXPECT Islam to be common among South Asian New Yorkers.

In a restaurant I used to go to all the time, I once saw a Muslim woman eating her meal:
While wearing her veil!

She had no difficulty doing so, apparently that is how the really devout women dine in public.

Okay, after double-checking my resources, I've realized that I misunderstood some of the content that I linked to in my last post. I'm sorry for misrepresenting things, naturalplastic.

My son's girlfriend (just over 2 years) is Uyghur, born in Canada, but has been home to Kashgar many times. If they get married any kids will most certainly be raised muslim. She is a combination of the old and the new - a very forward thinker. (I'm pretty sure she has asperger's too, we come up with the same conclusions about things all the time.)

This IS kinda interesting. Though the most newsworthy stuff to me is not "modern" Islamic culture, but the stuff about how Muslim thinkers of the Middle Ages seemed to have worked out Darwin's theory of Evolution through Natural Selection centuries before Darwin did. One thinker even seemed to imply that humans evolved from monkeys.

But Muslims seemed to have gotten more strict and anti free thinking in recent centuries. But apparently even today there is a lot of leeway in thinking even among Fundies in Islam. Leeway because the Koran is a lot more vague than the Bible is about how Creation happened. So you can shoehorn evolution into it more easily than you can into Genesis. Apparently many Muslims are "Old Earth Creationists".

Some Muslim regimes are anti evolution (like the Saudies), some (like Turkey) were able to reconcile evolution with theology. ISIS forbade the teaching of evolution in schools. And the African extremist group Boku Horun doesn't even believe in evaporation (much less in evolution). They use smartphones to coordinate their terrorism, but they don't believe in ANY thing in western science.

How can you live on the edge of the Sahara...and NOT believe in evaporation?

For what it's worth, Islam's influence on hip-hop culture isn't as great as the influence of movements like 5% Nation, Nation of Islam and Moorish Science Temple. Reference to 5% ideology show up regularly in East Coast hip-hop. Peace.
