I keep either the fan on my ac on, or my ac on year round because it drowns out this really low buzzing sound that I hear that drives me crazy. I think it has something to do with the nearby cell tower as I remember it starting not long after it was put up. It isn't constant either but when it turns on it is maddening.

The fan has been crutial for a good nights sleep since I was a young child. For most of my years I used those big box fans and always on high speed. Fans totally drowned out any other outside noises that would otherwise wake me up. I even wore out 4 or 5 of those fans due to seizing motor shafts which I suspect was a result of overuse and lack of oiling.

I think the noise is the main factor to me, although the air circulation is important too. Either way I have to use a fan year round.

I sleep best when I have some fresh moving air. I don't use my fan in bedroom as it literally produces a small wind tunnel effect. I only use it in my lounge occasionally (it is great for drying out the fitted carpet after I steam clean it). I usually keep a window in the lounge and bedroom cracked at night except in the coldest weather.

Also, I don't care to sleep in a totally dark room. I keep a light on low, either the first setting on a three way bulb or a nightlight. I also like some background noise in the form of news/talk radio or classical music. I usually prefer news and non politcal talk stations. I avoid evangelists, sports, and conspiracy theorists (Art Bell, &c.), and politico (Rush Limbaugh, Neil Boortz, Sean Hannity, Air America, &c.). Generally, I listen to BBC Five Live or BBC 4 via the internet.

I can sleep in a totally dark and quiet room but it takes me longer to get adjusted and comfortable.

I use a fan only during mid-late fall, winter, and early-mid spring. During the summer I keep my AC on high. I don't need it for the white noise effect (I prefer listening to soft-rock to fall asleep), but if my room isn't chilly enough I can't sleep, I need to be under at least 1 comforter and not be overly-warm if I want to ever fall asleep.

Fan club topic

I sleep in a cold room with lots of heavy blankets and Vicks up my nose so the crusties do not appear. Fans drive my nose nuts. Count me out, except on a 90+degree F summer night and I use a small electric one to get an air current.

I have a fan going in my room during the summer to not only keep me cool, but the white noise helps me sleep better :)

When I was a teen my fan finally wore out and I woke up before the blades stopped circling! 8O

Also I used to put a box fan on the floor, tape a sheet sround it and crwl inside to make a little wind tunnel. I got so into it I eventually out two fans up like that one blowing and one sucking.

So do you guys like it when its windy out too?

Windy weather dosen't usually bother me.

However, it is a nuisance when bicycling, especially when you have to ride in to the wind.

I have a fan in my room, in fact I can see it from where I'm sat without having to turn my head

it hasn't been switched on in a good while, although it is plugged in
not given me any side effects when used overnight in the summer months

in the winter it stays off 9/10 times

It gets real quiet in my room if I don't leave my fan on, I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.

When its cold out, i keep the fan off, but otherwise i have it on blowing right at me. It more for the coolness of it and the airflow. Although i did need to have it on when i lived in a city for 2 years. I live in a rural area now and the outside noise is hardly existent. Also used it at camp where there were lots of insects outside all night, but that was more cause I'd overheat at night, even with just that thin blanket, the other one that comes with the fitted on ( No idea what its name is).

It is really hard to sleep without a fan on in my room, due to the fact;
At night, trains are heard in the distance. Not the most annoying noise, rather soothing.
Pet peeve A, Motercycles that "VAAAAAAAAAAARRRRNNNNN!" by in the night.
Pet peeve B, Bass drivers, who have their music so loud, I can feel the vibrations in my bed!
I really prefer minamal light possible, and I would rather live outside city limits. Away from the lights that are not of nature, away from the roads of mass noise, away from the "Hurry up!" of life. Then I might buy a telescope and enjoy the sky!

And I thought it was only me!

Have to have one of those large, industrial Home Depot type fans on all night or I can't sleep. Just point it away from my face, and I'm ok. Absolutely cannot sleep without one. I take one in a suitcase when I travel to plug in the hotel room.

Like to have big box fans right next to my head. It's not uncommon down south in the U.S which is where I live.
