The US and the USSR have had the capability to shoot down satalites since the 1980's and the satalite that China shot down was relativly close to Earth, so their capabilities are not quite up their with current US and Russian capabilities.


The US only tested its ASAT (anti-satellite) missile once, in 1985. Nothing's been done with it since. The missile that they're going to use on the satellite is just a normal SAM (a Standard-3, I think) with no warhead and special software.

So China's ASAT capability is actually about the same as the US's. I don't know about the (former) USSR's ASAT capabilites.

China has a missile specifically designed to shoot down satellites which was tested successfully within the last year. The SM-3 is a SAM designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in the near-reentry phase. I honestly think the ASAT would be a LOT more useful given that its air launched from stratospheric heights and not weather dependent.

Well unfortunately we can't do that because a nuke is a hazard with radioactive fallout plus we have treatis forbidding the firing of nukes into the atmosphere since JFK and the other five major nuclear power signed it.

We'll kill more people with radioactive fallout.

The satellite was sucessfully hit.

The USS Lake Erie launched an SM-3 missile at approximately 10:26 PM EST.

Earlier the US military closed off commericial air space in a sector of the Pacific Ocean where the remnants of the satellite are expected to fall.

Actually, if its detonated high in the atmosphere there WONT be fallout. Fallout is the result of solid matter being vaporized and then transmutted. Dont forget there is a layer of plasma in the upper atmosphere that blocks harmful, ionizing radiation from reaching the ground. However, an upper atmospheric nuclear burst does produce a widely dispersive electromagnetic pusle which disrupts power and telecommunications....but not way out over the ocean :wink: .

The video of the Satellite Shoot-Down is no available for viewing on FoxNews(and finally, CNN) 8) . I wonder why it made frontpage on FoxNews before CNN..... :?
