One thing I know is that it's never to late for your life to improve.

Take J.K. Rowling for example. She went from unemployed and unimportant to the only billionaire author in existence in less than a decade.

Plenty of well known companies were also founded by people who never completed collage, or in some cases high school (these ironically include Wendy's and McDonald's). The point is that while doing better in school does improve your chances of success, it does not make or break them.

Did anyone here suck at high school (must have had both bad grades and a bad social life) yet excel once they escaped? If you did, give me words of reassurance and wisdom.

Not nessecarily. High school is pretty useless education, as long as you show you have a diploma most employers won't care about how you got it. Not having any friends doesn't mean you suck at school, either, hell, most of us here have none.

I generally found my interactions with fellow students to be neither enlightening nor encouraging, so I had little motivation to socialize. Even now it seems I can't get through to many of these people at reunions, and I have accepted the fact that this will never change. My only friend in HS worked with me during the summers on a farm. The work was hard, but I still remember it as a good time. I found it easier to talk to my teachers and other older people than people my own age. Don't expect too much out of your high school experience. Life only gets better from here. But do remember to take advantage of everything you can get from your coursework. There's always something else you can get even if you think you have everything. If you already have college level calculus, english, german, french, chemistry and physics, you can still gather something of value from art, woodworking, metalworking, spanish, etc.

I remember my mum telling me that my high school years were supposed to be the best years of my life. They've turned out to be the worst years of my life. I had to deal with stuck-up snobs and jocks, all day long, five days a week, ten months a year, for five long years, of my life. I hated school. I hated anything and everything that reminded me of school. It even got to the point, that I hated my sister, because she reminded me, of the regular girls, at school. I hated the latest music. I hated the latest fashions. I hated Much Music. I hated the radio stations, that played, "Today's hottest music!" I hated how my peers sounded so plain. I didn't know any teens at my school, who spoke with an accent. The only kids who spoke differently, were the ones, who had speech impediments. I hated that, too.

After being out of school, for fifteen years, I love almost everyone and everything.

I sucked in Highschool. I joined the football team and totally sucked, stuck with it for two years anyway. I was the fastest runner with the most endurance, hit the weight room every second day, but couldn't catch a ball worth s**t so I was second string defencive end.
Also there was this sexy girl Sheena who was obviously crushing hard on me for like half a year, 5' black hair, dark eyes, I'd giver her a 10 out of 10.
I really liked her too as did so many guys, she always jumped up and hugged me and invited me to parties, but my social skills were so BAD back then and I was so shy I didn't know what to do, she eventually stopped talking to me. I was stomache churnigly depressed.
Then I started smoking dope and hanging with some new friends. We smoked weed every day, skipped entire days, egged houses, stole smokes from convinence stores, my grades plummeted and I felt so desperate to fit in but couldn't, I was constantly putting myself under the microscope and feeling depressed and inferior.
Eventually some drama erupted in the group over these two kids who stole a bus pass from another kid, somehow this kid who got jacked blamed the theives and me, even though I WASN'T AT HIS HOUSE AT THE TIME. The group split up into three groups, luckily I had made some REAL friends in that group who I still hang out with today.

I thought I would regret those days for the rest of my life, for the most part I was severly depressed... Now all I regret is not getting better grades, I learned to put the past behind me and I had some great experiences. At 19 I got involved in a relationship for the first time in my life while abroad for a few months, I learned alot about many things in that time and now have a goal I'm passionate about. If I could go back to highschool knowing what I know now I would DOMINATE 8)

So in other words, highschool is truly nothing.

High School confidential topic

Miss Pickwickian, I thought you were in a gifted programme with others of your intellectual prowess. No wonder you are bored.

I was not bright. I just hated my home life and school was just its evil twin. I left both at age 16, and became a street person for two years, until I had my first child. Then I lived on a commune for a year and then left that to come back east and get an apartment and go to work to raise my child. Later I took high school maths and sciences at night at an adult high school. I have always been self taught in other areas but I basically did not go beyond the high school level for various complex reasons. I do not recommend other young people do what I did. This comment is for illustrative purposes only. But this is how I have lived my life; I do not regret my choices. You have to live with the decisions you make; this is the only advice I will give.

High school is the ultimate personification of useless bureaucractic indifference masqueraded as "compassion" multipled to a infinate factor and diagnosed in by a pyschologist.

In fact I wish some people in my high school would be diagnosed by a psychatrist.

High School is not Fin del Mundo but it's where the pressure of homogenization and whitewashing are in full force, and that is why I hate it!

Yeah high school kind of sucks. Or really sucks. Something like that :)

Can't say I had bad grades, but I didn't have any social life at all, really. I didn't finish high school, though, and ended up with an equivalency and transferred whatever AP and other credit I had somewhere.

One guy I know did have pretty bad grades, maybe some but below-average social life (kind of hung out with some losers, maybe dated once or twice, I thought) but now he's like totally dean's list and 3.9 something GPA at a state university and can probably go to grad school at a major nationally ranked university. So there. :)

I had a mediocre time until the last couple of years when I started being bullied... all through school/college (that's 6th form, not university for any Yanks reading  ) I never achieved any grades higher than a C, apart from a couple of As and a B in Law.

Now I'm at university, just finished a foundation course, about to start a degree next year... f**k knows how I'm going to do.

Anyway, as for school being awful - it is! After school, I really found myself though - I'm so much more confident (I suppose because I didn't know I was an aspie, I just got on and did things like socialise, etc because I felt I had to) and I've done so many cool things :D

I have just started high school and I'm already sick of it:

1. Sophomores often shout "freshmen suck" and one threw a rotten banana at me.
2. Teachers just keep cranking out homework.
3. It's all really exhausting.
4. I have near death experiences every day from juniors and seniors driving SUVs.
5. I have classes that are two hours long!

University is much better. A lot more focused on topics that are of your interest. (some crappy classes of course but A LOT less). I know a few people who did bad in high school and did good or great in university also know a lot who did great in high school and bad in university. I wouldn`t worry about it.

The main advantage of high schools is that you can check yes, on 'did you graduate?'...;)

College is the maximum amount of freedom and the minimum amount of responsibility...;)

Middle school was a terrible experience for me. Had no friends whatsoever and was in extremely easy classes. I was bored in those classes as it offered no challenge. Every minute in that school felt like an enternity. I had problems with guys due to the fact I was different. I just didn't want to be around school anymore.
