I think it's worth a try.

I really need to go to bed is what's on my mind

Oh, can you play it? 8O That's awesome! I've long wanted to learn blues, jazz, or classical guitar, but my discipline in playing guitar tends to only last a few weeks at a time. :? And then I lose the callouses and have to start all over again, which can be an intensely painful process with my apparently-unusually-sensitive fingertips. But I digress. Do you think it can be played by a person who has very small hands? And I mean really quite small--I recently compared them with half a dozen eleven-year-olds and only one of them had hands as small as I do. :? I've never even been able to manage a proper F chord despite years of trying.

i'm of the opinion that anyone can learn the guitar so maybe biased but i'd say definitely yes. i've seen fairly small hands out-stretch big mits too.
the key for my own learning was getting past the early stages, i nearly gave up!! now i've been playing about 9.5 years and am so very glad i persevered.. i think learning blues would be easier, it is generally simpler than jazz or classical, for one thing theory knowledge is not particularly necessary and many blues 'greats' have technique that most jazz and classical players might call sloppy. my F chord is still rough and ready but most people probably couldn't tell.. maybe because i'm supercool, but maybe not lol.
if you have the desire i urge you to 'go for it', i'll be frank to make a point, i have had very enjoyable sex and played some emotional blues in the same day and they were both equally enjoyable.. and i was really really in the mood you know? well you get the point, excuse my crude example. can't overstate how amazing it can be. besides, Fudo is watching! lol so, in the words of Frank Zappa 'shut up and play yer guitar' ;)

I'm planning to save my money for a sunny day. :) There's going to be yet another reissue of all the old Kinks music on the PYE label, in CD format with double CDs in each jewel case! :D That t will be 2 hours of music, alternate takes and bootleg takes under each title! :D

It's only 9pm and I'm drowsy :?. It seems earlier than I'd normally go to sleep, but given I've been staying up past my normal bed time lately... I may ride this feeling and go pass out on my bed for 9 hours like a good Lace-Bane :)

That's partly why I'm thinking I should go for blues. It does seem more beginner friendly (or "false beginner" friendly). Glad to hear I seem to've got the right impression.

Thanks for the encouragement. ^_^ I'm thinking I'll buy a book to give me a little structure and the added motivation of not wanting the money to have gone to waste. Maybe I'll pick up my poor, neglected guitar a bit today.

If Kaybee has the time she should go for it :D. Your hands could make it tough to play but that doesn't make it impossible. Alot of hand size isn't as important depending on the guitar you choose to play. I play a Gibson SG because I love the feel of her neck :P. The SG has a wider neck than most guitars I've touched so it gives something for my hands to grab on to... I have relatively big hands. I've seen guitars with thinner necks that I wont even attempt to play... so I think maybe if you found the right guitar you could potentially play if you really wanted to :D.

To me though the neck is the most important part of the guitar. As I said, my SG has a wide neck... without it my hands trip on my own fingers because they are too long :P. So I would bet if you found a guitar with a thin enough neck... your fingers could reach the frets with more ease... It is rather sad that you most likely wont be playing an SG though :(.

Also I forgot that if you play an acoustic, they tend to be much harder to hold a chord down and they tend to have wide necks... so maybe an electric would be preferable.

The setup could be important too. I play with a thicker gauge of string than most because I like bending strings like mad and having a heavier sound, but they are harder to press down. A lighter gauge of string would make cords easier to hold down... but Lace-Bane often snaps those strings, and changing strings is so boring :(. I often find myself playing my guitar hard like a bass guitar so I do massacre normal gauge strings

I think you should go for it though if you want to learn... I too don't have much drive though so I can sympathize with that. I've been playing off and on for about ten years, but I've spent much more time on the off end of the switch :|.

Every time I go to play I end up with bloodied fingers because I forget that I no longer have calluses >_<

I don't play much blues like music though... I play a mix between Metal and classical. The metal is stuff I learned, but the stuff I make up myself is classical in sound and play... so trying to mix them gets fun :D.

Heh, she really doesn't. >_> But maybe we'll try, anyway.

I was thinking this, but I'm pretty sentimentally attached to my guitar. :? I think his neck's a little wider than my last guitar's was, though. My last guitar (years ago) was an electric-acoustic, which I bought specifically because the size and shape felt perfect (even if the sound was not as good as a full-fledged acoustic). But alas, she was stolen and I inherited my current guitar (a 1978 handmade Hohner HG-320), which I've grown to love. It's got a really great sound, and I can't help but feel a certain respect and responsibility due to its age. ^_^; There are a lot of inexpensive used guitars around here, though, so maybe I'll go browsing. I guess a great guitar isn't much use if you can't play it. :(

When I originally started playing, I tried out both electric and acoustic. In the end, electric just didn't do it for me. I love the sound and feel of acoustic. Electric was much easier for me, though. :? I think I'll take your advice above and at least look around for a guitar with a slightly thinner neck.

Wow, you must be hard on the strings! 8O I usually use light gauge, sometimes extra light. I've never had a problem with breaking the strings. ^_^

And thanks for the encouragement. It is very inspiring. :) I have always loved the guitar, but I've been playing on and off (mostly off) for about eleven years now, and I'm ashamed to say that I was actually better at it ten years ago than I am now. >_< Still, every now and then I get it in my head to learn to play properly. Maybe this time!
