I like birds. A lot. And in wintertime I always throw bits of old breadcrumbs, cheese made very small, little pieces of apple and various little seeds (birdseeds bought in the shop). It's both a helping intention but also I like them as much in the garden as possible. Added up there are over 15 different species of birds in the garden. More even. Counting visitors as well maybe it adds up to 30.... But to name 7 that stay year round; the Blackbird of course (strangest thing 2 males and 1 female, odd but true/maybe son of the couple), 1 male Robin, a pair of Hedge Sparrows (those three sing the nicest songs), Wood Pigeons, a pair of Collared Turtle Doves, Chaffinches, Great Tits and other Tits as well
(I didn't name them). There are more but hey....
But the funniest thing I saw a couple of days ago.... A Blackbird (the male) was fooling around with the Mistle Thrush, the first was kind of playing and chasing the other on the ground, no aggression or something. The Mistle Thrush ran away and waited a bit further away wondering what the Blackbird would do. This went on for a couple of minutes. No flying away....
They're both members of the same family of birds, i.e. 'Turdidae'. Here's a picture of them both (not taken by me).
That was fun to watch but out of the blue came the female Blackbird (she's more brown and easily distinguishable from the male) who doesn't seem to be happy about the whole business on the stage. She actually hit the Blackbird with her beak quite hard, I thought and seemingly on purpose. Predatory-like she flew towards him and went for him and he was too late to get away. I know this is all perceived with my human brain but it made me laugh. Wish I had filmed it.
