Trigger Warning: this is about something terrible and terminal happening to a wild animal and me discovering it after the fact in a horrible way. Skip this post if you think it will upset you. I've put the sad part in a quote box. [edit in: I am OK, and I gave the poor creature a decent burial ASAP after discovering it.]
Quote:
As best I can tell from the evidence, an eagle used my driveway to kill and eat a box turtle today, while I was out. I came back home and got out of my car to see a ghastly sight and was horrified that I might have inadvertently crushed the turtle with my car. As I prepared to bury it, crying and telling it how sorry I was, I realized that... there was no "it"... there was only an empty shell and a few scraps of what had once been a living creature. Still, something alive had been killed right outside my home!! !! I buried it and said a prayer over it, and I'm still sad about it.
I have a red-tailed hawk decoy in front of my home, which I move around so that it looks as though it sits in various shrubs. I guess I'll have to put another one by the driveway, but I don't think it would have helped this poor tortoise. If I recall aright, it's eagles that do this. And I've seen eagles in the area.
I'm unspeakably relieved that I wasn't after all the cause of death, but I'm worried sick now about the nest of baby bunnies in my garden... and their momma. Whom I did see this afternoon, but OMG I'm so worried for her safety now. (And for the other momma, whose nest I haven't yet found, but I know it's here, since she's here so much.)
Yes, I know this is how nature works, but I'm with Annie Dillard on this: "What Creator could be so cruel, not to kill otters (and tortoises and bunnies), but to let them (and us) care?" (parentheticals mine)
