I was picking up my trash in my apartment, I hurt my arm. I was tired all day, didn’t feel like doing much on the Internet.

Took my 13 year dog to the vet this morning. Turns out his body was shot through with cancer and I had to have him put down.

My sincere condolences. Am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace.

Wish you great strength in these horrible times.

I hope posting something that made me unhappy yesterday rather than today is acceptable:

I watched an episode of the new Lost In Space with my children and one of them, a boy, sat next to me in an oversized chair. It's summer, he plays hard and like most young boys, doesn't care to bathe. Smelly boy. It was very distracting to me. I coped by breathing through my mouth for the whole episode. I'm hyper-sensitive to all senses but taste. I was VERY close to asking him to move and VERY close to saying out loud: "You smell!". I refrained from doing either.

I felt bad that I could not have just noted his odor and then put it out of my mind thereby fully enjoying the gift of being close to him.

I told my wife about it at bedtime and how I felt bad about it. She reminded me how it would have been very bad for me to tell him that he smelled and told me to be sure to refrain from acting on that impulse if such a situation arises in the future.

Oh, I am so sorry.... he was with you for a fourth of your life, give or take. That is just huge. I'm so sorry.

Trigger Warning: this is about something terrible and terminal happening to a wild animal and me discovering it after the fact in a horrible way. Skip this post if you think it will upset you. I've put the sad part in a quote box. [edit in: I am OK, and I gave the poor creature a decent burial ASAP after discovering it.]

Quote:
As best I can tell from the evidence, an eagle used my driveway to kill and eat a box turtle today, while I was out. I came back home and got out of my car to see a ghastly sight and was horrified that I might have inadvertently crushed the turtle with my car. As I prepared to bury it, crying and telling it how sorry I was, I realized that... there was no "it"... there was only an empty shell and a few scraps of what had once been a living creature. Still, something alive had been killed right outside my home!! !! I buried it and said a prayer over it, and I'm still sad about it.

I have a red-tailed hawk decoy in front of my home, which I move around so that it looks as though it sits in various shrubs. I guess I'll have to put another one by the driveway, but I don't think it would have helped this poor tortoise. If I recall aright, it's eagles that do this. And I've seen eagles in the area.

I'm unspeakably relieved that I wasn't after all the cause of death, but I'm worried sick now about the nest of baby bunnies in my garden... and their momma. Whom I did see this afternoon, but OMG I'm so worried for her safety now. (And for the other momma, whose nest I haven't yet found, but I know it's here, since she's here so much.)

Yes, I know this is how nature works, but I'm with Annie Dillard on this: "What Creator could be so cruel, not to kill otters (and tortoises and bunnies), but to let them (and us) care?" (parentheticals mine)

I understand feeling quite well without being somber..

Wish you great strength in these horrible times.

I’m sorry for your loss :(

Mom telling me to apply for disability.

Dad telling me about job openings at Rite-Aid.

I know. It’s not them; it’s me.

I don’t want to do anything.
