I'm sorry to hear that. I can sympathize very much.
I don't know how mine started. One night I went to bed and could hear a high pitched buzzing which I thought was electrical in nature. I searched the house for over an hour before realizing it was coming from my head. Somehow I "knew" it would never stop, and it didn't. I don't know my frequency levels but it's very high pitched, with fax machine tones, whistles, overtures and screeches that seem to "pinch" inside my head (zaps?) I have seen all sorts of doctors to no avail. It is pervasive across my whole mind rather than feeling like one side or the other, although various squonks can overlap from the direction of my ears.
there are at least 15 different ways the ringing happens, in terms of disease etiology. the majority occur in the brain itself and have nothing to do with the ears. there have been cases of people stricken with strokes who found their tinnitus finally stopped. funny thing about my ringing is that it temporarily disappears when I concentrate on something. also when I try to "listen into" something very quiet, it also disappears, like it steps out of the way for a bit. anyways, some people swear by gingko biloba to treat their ringing ears. others, such as the actor William Shatner [whose hearing was damaged by explosions on the Star Trek set] use special white noise generators they wear like hearing aids, some hearing aids come with this built-in.
