Well that kind of thing just confuses me...if you don't believe that...why make the post?

You must see how it would confuse people to say: 'Christianity is a load of bollocks. Christians are obsessed with other people having sex. They're so sexually frustrated themselves that they seem to think, 'screw it, we're not getting any therefore no one else can!' Especially gay sex. Catholics are OBSESSED with gay sex' in one breath and then in the next say that you basically didn't mean it at all.

It is basically the reason I class religeous evangelicism, dogmatism and ignorance the as same the same thing as atheist evangelism, dogma and ignorance.

I've already explained. I was in a bad mood and I often generalise about religious people like that. I was referring to a certain kind of Christian. Not all of them. What I said still stands for those I was referring to.

The point remains though...generalising about people based on the fact that you don't like some is never a good thing. How is it any different to someone saying 'All gays are idiots; homosexuality is bollocks' and then saying 'Oh well actually, I didn't mean that, it is just that I know some homosexual people who are a**holes, I didn't mean to imply that they all are'

But I don't pretend to be a good person or claim to act how I should all the time. Also, Christians/gays is entirely different. You choose to practice a religion, you don't choose to be gay. Therefore you cannot compare the two. The fact that someone is Christian says something about their personality. The fact that someone is gay says f*ck all about who they are as a person.

The salient point being that the fact that someone chooses to be a Christian doesn't say that they align themselves with the type of behaviour as described in your original post. So the comparison is valid in this instance i.e. people who are loosely similar in one respect are often completely diverse in other respects and stereotyping a class of people based on a minority of them is just plain ignorant. The fact that someone is Christian actually says very little about their personality...there is far too much diversity in not only the Christian religeon itself, but in the followers of Christianity for much meaningfull generalisations to be made that can apply to individual christians.

I accept that there is a difference between choosing to practice a religeon and just 'being' something but the point is that one can be a bigot in respect of both of these instances.

If you think that people shouldn't face bigotry based on how they were born, why should it be fair for people to face bigotry on something they have chosen to do that is completely harmless to other people? Don't they also deserve some kind of immunity? Atheist people used to face bigotry and were forced to conform to religeon; they weren't born atheist,; they chose to follow those beliefs...did they not deserve the right to practice beliefs which didn't impinge upon other people?

I know that. I have said that I do not believe all Christians are like that. I've said before that humans are stupid, ugly idiots. I don't mean all humans though.


They were born non-religious. They remained non-religious. I don't choose to follow any beliefs. I simply do not believe in a god.

Fine. Personally, I am intolerant of bigotry in any form including the type where people overgeneralise against something and then say that they didn't really mean it and, oh, actually they have plenty of black/muslim/christian friends anyway so they can't be a bigot.



I don't see how that has anything to do with it. There are a load of far-right extremists who express bigotry against homosexuals, non-whites and are also atheists...does that mean that all atheists should be called gay-hating racists?

I wasn't saying I had religious family members to make out I was not a bigot. I was saying that to show that I am aware of different kinds of Christians and that they are not all the same. It also pisses me off when some religious people claim they are not homophobic simply because they have a gay friend, therefore I would not do the same, regardless of how you interpret it.
I never said that I didn't mean what I wrote in my original post. All I said was that I should have made it clear that it didn't apply to ALL Christians. That was in response to you saying they weren't born atheist therefore it's the same as discriminating against Christians. I'm not far-right. I am moderatly left wing. I am not racist. And I am gay myself. So no, not all atheists are gay-hating racists.

But that is exactly what you did do; you overgeneralised, then said that you didn't believe the overgeneralisation was true and then said that you had christian friends and family.

So, by your logic, It would a fair comment to say that all atheists are gay-hating racists.

Even if it doesn't apply to ALL of them, it does apply to some of them.

Because I didn't actually mean that all Christians were like that. And I corrected myself about 5 minutes later. Jesus, all I did was get pissed off and wrote a load of bollocks. I'm not the first to do that and I have since corrected myself. People say things like 'liberals piss me off'. That doesn't mean there won't be some liberals that don't piss them off though. Again, I didn't mean all Christians. Yes, I should have been more specific. But I accept that I have a problem with saying the first thing that comes into my head.

Only if the fact that they are racist and homophobic is directly related to the fact that they are atheist. In which case, although it isn't correct that all are like that, I could understand someone getting pissed off and saying that without thinking it through.

Well, to me it would merely make them sound ignorant and bigoted.

If they had thought about it, then said that and actually believed it then yes. But if they were just angry and posted that while they were still feeling like that, then I can understand that. People say things when they're angry all the time. It doesn't make them ignorant or a bigot.

I didn't say that - I said it makes them sound bigoted and ignorant.

I remember a story in the news a couple of years ago about an English football manager, who in a moment of frustration called a player a 'black b*stard' live on air. Whether being angry whilst he said it was an excuse or not is a moot point I guess.

That's entirely different though. That's about racism, not disagreeing with a group of people. If I said something like that, then I would be an ignorant bigot, yes. But what I said was completely different to that and I would never justify what he said by anger.
