Usually a few seconds. It may be annoying, but, when I try to answer immediately (or don’t hold back the impulse to do so), I end up making tips of the slungue or saying something stupid most of the time.

Once, I was asked something (can’t remember what) by a stranger. I was unable to put an answer together before he ran out of patience, so he asked if I didn’t speak his language. That really amused me, and I wished I could convincingly reply something in a different language so he’d think I was a foreigner and leave me alone. There was no need to, though, because he finally left without me having made a single sound.
