Charlton Heston is a good actor. I can see why my brother admires him so much (my brother is an aficionado of old movies). I like how Dr. Zira calls him "Bright Eyes". If we could change our usernames, I would change mine to "Bright Eyes".


Heston was a little over-the-top. Then there was that twist in the end where he sees the remains of the Statue of Liberty and he realizes he was on Earth the whole time.

Well, that they are but for the time they were considered pretty good. "It's futuristic, innit?"
I never was convinced by the paralyzed lips thing with the masks though, and it became a bit of a distraction. Plastic apes with Botox? I don't think so.
But the story is very Twilight Zone and I think Rod Sterling was involved with it at some point, so there's a certain nostalgia value attached to it too.

I already knew that MONKEY didn't like the Planet of the Apes films because she mentioned it in a thread about the upcoming Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Interestingly, that thread is what got me interested in watching the films in the first place, because I wanted to decide for myself whether I liked them or not.

I don't think that the original Planet of the Apes is boring. I find the whole premise of the story to be really fascinating. Even if there isn't a whole lot of action going on, I just like observing that world and the way it operates.

I've got a book recommendation, have you ever heard of Great Apes by Will Self? It's a bit like Planet Of The Apes but set in 1990's London and the whole world is run by chimps and bonobos, and humans are kept in zoos and are like our chimps. And there's this chimp who has a delusion that he's human and a neurologist (who is based on Oliver Sacks and there are references to him through out) tries to cure him of said delusion. It's a really really funny and witty book, not for the faint hearted though as it's VERY rude in parts.
