I've always been taught, but I think it would be much easier to teach yourself if it was a second instrument.

I would say it all depends on the person, if they have the right motivation, they can be as good as any professionally taught person. But if not, then they will most likely never reach their potential.
But professional lessons can really be very costly.

Especially if that teacher would just want you to spend all your time on that one instrument.

also, playing with others helps.. especially for improvisation.
for me, i'd be better off being taught for quite a few things.. although i've learnt a lot on my own too.

In my case I dont have the money or resources to be go to a music lesson , and it can be good to challenge oneself even if it is just to be able to play novice songs or to know essential chords...
