Yes Froya, it is mid winter here now, 2 months away from Whitebaiting season. It is an area of fishing we are actually allowed to catch and sell ( within reason) without the tax man coming after us. Also because they are so small there is no need for them to be processed through a licensed fishmonger. So its a nice thing to be able to do during the late winter months as some of the areas are just nice to sit by and start a small camp fire and absorb nature... I have been somewhat void of the connection with nature over the last couple of years which saddens me greatly so hope i can experience what i used to again soon, maybe this coming season may be different. :)

Generally we eat them as fritters. just some egg whites beaten with an eggyolk, some salt and pepper and maybe a squeeze of lemon.

How did your fishing with your friend go the other day?

I sharpen all my hooks again now even if new unless they are the more expensive brand as i was also missing catches, but seems since sharpening them my strike rate went up...

I googled whitebaiting and fritters, so I know what you are talking about. How do you catch them, from the boat? The campfire sounds lovely. I would probably get too restless for such a thing being alone.

It seems like there is possible to buy something similar as that sharpener. It is called a diamond whetstone. I have written it down on my "to do" list.

The weather was perfect when Anne and I went fishing. We bought some food that we enjoyed outdoors. We didn't see any sign of fish however, not a single bite.

The day after I went down there alone, and then I caught a mackerel!

Haha, yeah, thats what i thought when first trying, but they dont really have much of a gut system as they are so small as are the microscopic brains at that size. Taste nice. The are about $100 a kilo here, so if you get a good run can be good, but like they say its fishing not catching so you have good and bad days :)

We can do it on boat, generally only from shore.

kiwi accent! haha They do sound similar but more subtle, just like the US and Canadian accent is.

Just been learning the last 2 years, so was rather hit and miss. First year did it with a local and first few days made a few hundred bucks but then he started to make excuses of not giving the agreed share as we would also camp over night as well, so instantly could see what he was doing so stopped going... Other than being taught the different nets, already knew from decades of fishing how whitebait swim... So spent a few months reading everything about them. Last year, mainly scoped out areas for this year so have some quiet spots to head to as more popular spots can get a little aggressive. People really prize their whitebait stands here, so not wanting any confrontation have found some good spots for this year, So fingers crossed..

^Oh, so you have been planning for this season I see. That will be exiting to see if your planned spots are good :D
I have done the same with fishing, trying to find spots that are little known to others. I use different types of maps, to do this. Some places that are the most popular, I don't go to anymore. Doesn't matter if I'm the first one there. Some "aggressive" fishers comes and stand really close to me, talking among each other (ignoring me) and making it really uncomfortable. So I leave.

Yes, ideally i was wanting to move out, head over to Eng;and to see family. But isnt too realistic right at this moment, so just selling as much stuff as i can and maybe if lucky i can head down south this sept. to where the main whitebait spots are.. However we have some good runs up here also and a few nice remote spots that didnt seem to have anyone around last year.

It's a great bar, I come here to remember I'm not a floating head.

Do you guys have any plans for the summer? (that you feel like sharing)
I guess it's winter for Biggles.

I'm not doing anything special. Just try and enjoy some of the seasonal activities. Like fishing, swimming in the sea (IF it's warm enough) sun bade, gather berries and mushrooms.

Mushroom hunting for Boletas & maybe chanterelles has come up but plan 1 is cruise & ride dirt jumps. If I can afford new skis & skins hopefully an old friend & I can ski some glaciers. :D
