Actually, there will be some small temporary changes made to my avatar this week. Watch this space.
No, that one over there.

Nothing noisy or animated, mind. I don't want to get too flashy. 8O

How does one make an animated gif or whatever they are?

Ooh, no - they're far too noisy and distracting.

An animated gif file uses a special gif file format which instead of a single image has a sequence of images stored in it which are displayed in sequence to make the animation work. The format also allows the time delay between the frames to be specified, defining the playback speed. So the file acts like a flip-book animation, playing through a series of images.
Browsers and the like recognise this special format and know to display it as a sequence, instead of just a single static image, so dedicated "playback" software isn't required.

There are various things available online or for download to create these but the most tedious part is creating the individual images. That's no big deal for a simple colour flip animation but it can go on a bit for a long sequence.
Once the individual frames are available they're assembled in the correct order into the final file along with the individual frame display delays, and then saved as an animated gif file.
Job done!

Ah, thanks for that. Maybe I should do one involving cones :)

That is how I created my avatar. It consists of three gif images shown in the order 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 and repeated.

 Yes - maybe one bouncing up & down?
That shouldn't be too difficult because it could use the same image but moved to a different position for each frame (to create the "up/down" travel), with just a couple of changes (swelling a little or bending slightly) when it's "on the ground".

The trickiest part about creating animated gifs for this site is getting the file size small enough to be acceptable.

Very true. There's simply not enough space available for a major production (which is probably a blessing!) but often, surprisingly few images are required to create a workable animation - as in yours.
Also, reducing the number of colours and dithering the images can help the file size without messing up the appearance too much.

Doesn't make sense. She's resting her head on a man's shoulder.

I hate, hate hate FRUIT FLIES! I have got sticky paper up in two locations, and yet they keep flitting in my face, and trying to go up my nose as I type. Ugh! :x

It's talking to the reader, who may be tilting their head sideways to read the text.
