someday i'll visit Padiham i think.

Some photos of mine from Padiham that I took last year. I know that some of them are underexposed - not a lot I can do about that at this stage.

The town isn't especially pretty or inviting; it's a former industrial town in east Lancashire with all the social problems that go with it.

They recently had a BNP mayor installed, although the way he got it wasn't down to the electorate - it was on a rota basis.

This crest features on Padiham's (former?) police station in use during the Victorian era. Built in 1845.

wow. thank you. it totally brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat to see Padiham. i really, really appreciate that you posted those pictures.

i know it's weird to be attached to a place i've never been to, but there is such a strong part of me that wants to walk up those streets and touch those buildings and go into those stores. i don't have desire to live there or anything - just to see it/feel it.

Yeah. As I said, Padiham is similar in character to a lot of the other former industrial towns over that way - Colne, Nelson, Accrington and so on. Some of these places are quite divided and this part of Lancashire is perhaps the strongest area in the whole country for the BNP.

The best place to be in (urban) east Lancashire to my mind - the General Scarlett (Moorhouse Brewery's tap pub):

i found the postcard with the only written reference to the Hole In The Wall, and it is no help at all in determining exactly where it was located. the postcard is a photo of my grandfather in Sunday School from 1923 that i think his brother Robert sent to him some years later. i believe Robert owned or kept the Hole In The Wall at that time. i can't be sure even what town it was located in - really it may have been in another town close by such as Hebden Bridge, which isn't too far.

*sigh* i don't think i'll ever find out where it was.... too many towns had pubs and inns by that name.

Hebden Bridge has a pub called Hole in the Wall! It's still open, too! It's not that common a pub name, at least not these days.

yeah i found one with the google, but i see that i didn't say that very clearly lol.

my grandfather is in the front right in the pic. quite the interesting look he has going on, rather like he is preparing to set fire to the church.

There is one still open in Blackburn too under that name.

You have to remember, also, that an awful lot of pubs have closed down here in the intervening 88 years. An awful lot.

For instance, there used to be nearly 400 pubs in Preston in the 1960s. Now there's about a third of that number, if that.

I was out and about with my camera in the Ribble Valley this afternoon and took some more shots. I'm uploading them to Flickr gradually but here's two of them:

your platforms are so clean. the people look like tourists for some reason, though i don't know because i've only seen tourists in canada.
