Leave it to Microsoft...

Ran the upgrade disc to bump Vista to 7...a mere six hours twas all it took...

The second it booted past the Windows 7 welcome screen, my monitor throws up a dialogue box saying "Screen Resolution Out of Range - Monitor Going to Sleep"

So for the next half hour, until it finishes its setup cycle, I have to keep turning my monitor back on every fifteen seconds, so I can follow the procedure and click OK when prompted, until it stops and I can finally go into Control Panel and adjust the resolution.

It gets done - Yay! I set up all my preferences, themes, wallpaper, etc, etc, add essential software, reboot.

Gets to the new Windows logo and hangs...and hangs...and hangs...finally, I have to unplug the unit to reboot. Hangs at the logo again. Runs its own recovery procedure - OOoOoHH, We're SO SORRY, but Windows CANNOT RECOVER from this error...

Long story short, after several cold boots, I did finally manage to get into Restore and take it back to the moment it first finished loading 7.

Its just so pathetic, that even with all the buzz about 7 being the most stable version of Windows EVER and so functional and such an improvement, that it f**ks up so royally right out of the box.

Schmucks.

You can do ubuntu + a windows XP virtual machine. Mac definitely wouldn't beat THAT in software compatibility and windows7 would need the XP virtual machine anyway if you want software compatibility, so...

Elaborate on that, please.
The only way MS could top windows XP is by releasing XP again... They tried pulling a lame stunt by first making an absurdly broken release (vista) and then trying to tweak it to make it work and get advantage of all the hype over that move. But seriously, most people are either unimpressed or ret*d (and would buy anything regardless). It is windows XP all the way.

i recommend using still stable vista

lol.

There is no such thing as a 'free' windows upgrade.

Apparently according to leejosepho, for some reason he had a free upgrade that came with his laptop.
I bought my laptop a few days before they released Windows 7, if i bought the same model compaq laptop days after the release, would I get Windows 7?

...I hate Windows 7. Stupid set-up and junk.
And I have to fix the screen resolution every time I sign in. (It's 1024x768, darn it. Stop changing on me.)...

Whenever something microsoft related is said to be 'free' you either already paid for it, or you'll pay for it eventually.

If your laptop came with Windows Vista Premium or better, I think you are supposed to get the upgrade. Try calling the store that sold the computer to you. They probably have the info on how to get it. I work at a store that sells computers. If they don't help you, give me a pm. I don't have the info handy, but I can get it for you. It involves a download from Microsoft.

I'll keep with Vista. I do have the coupon, if anyone wants it PM me. Maybe when Chrome OS comes out it can replace XP on my laptop.

Yes my laptop did come with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. As i said before, it has a 4GB of ram, 250GB hard drive with AMD Turion x2 with NVIDIA Graphics 9200, obviously any version works on it... would the built in webcam have to be installed seperately?

I bought my Acer 5517 at BestBuy just a couple of weeks before Win7 was released, and the free Win7 upgrade came as part of that deal (and without the computer costing extra to cover it). I do not know the details, but I do know certain computers purchased within a certain window (no pun intended) just prior to the release of Win7 do qualify for a free upgrade. My upgrade was only for 32-bit and it did not come directly from MicroSoft, but it installed perfectly along with the Acer driver disk and it verified with MicroSoft just fine. I forget where I saw the information, but I believe there are computers eligible for a free Win7 upgrade even if that was not part of the deal at the time of purchase.

Google Chrome OS is going to be just another Linux distro, from what I heard. You might as well put Ubuntu or Xubuntu on that XP laptoo, if you are wanting to abandon XP, or dual boot.

I think clean installs are always the best way to go. Whenever I install a new system on my computer, I either 1) Run a backup and create a new partition on my hard drive, or 2) Format an old partition (after rescuing any files I wish to keep of course) and install the new system on there.

I've always wanted to built a computer but it cost so much money to buy all the parts, but in the end, you got the computer that you wanted :D
Windows 7 is like the next evolution of vista and at the same time, its like another version of mac. :D

Heh...can totally relate on that point! I've had good old Windows XP for well on 9 years now (made ever such a fuss when Dad upgraded the family PC from '98!), and although my poor old laptop is slowly grinding to a halt with all the clogging up that XP inevitably experiences after a few years, I just can't bear to let Dad even just wipe it blank and reinstall! Same start-bar, same Autocorrect dictionary, quick-start shortcuts, icons in the icon tray, nice black background with an XKCD cartoon in the middle... it's like a slept-in bed, you know? Nice and familiar, everything's where it's always been... :)

My (Aspie, of course) boyfriend reckons I should switch to Linux... but that would DEFINITELY be out of my comfort zone for changes!

Ironic, really. Too Aspie for Linux!

I am also having adjustment problems. I got the only "cheap" computer with windows 7 today (the rest were either expensive beyond reason or came with Vista and an option to pay to upgrade to windows 7; ironically I would have been more willing to pay to "downgrade" to familiar XP which I once despised for so long for not being Windows 98.....LOL).

On the plus side I now have a space bar again, but I am finding that I keep typing hyphens after all this time using them instead.

Some observations; I do not like the Start Menu; it is just plain weird.

For some reason setting my internet settings did not result in an icon (for accessing the internet) being installed to desktop but XP always either did this for me or gave me an option to do it, so now I will have to figure out how to put icons on the desktop.

The toolbar is wrong (and/or unfamiliar); what is up with that? My browser page looks "cut short" to my eyes, and I keep wanting to maximize it. The tool bars in contrasting colours are very distracting to me. I had expected the top band was an effect of IE and was surprised and disappointed that it's still there using Firefox.

Did you check out your EULAs? By goodness, this is one nosy OS.

So far I like nothing about this OS and dislike much of it, particularly the bit about it not being Windows XP (which I initially disliked for not being Windows 98....).

I think I will send away for the current distribution of Ubuntu (if they are still sending the disks out); I have tried it with my previous computers without any success but maybe it will work with this one. I do not use much hardware (currently I do not even have a printer). I wonder if I can dual boot this thing (having only the vaguest idea of what that means and a less clear idea still of what may be entailed).

I have been without a computer for days, so I should just be happy to be back on the internet (and despite my grumbling with the unfamiliar OS, I actually am estatic to have a working computer again).
