I think the movies are not really made for the real fans who try to know everything correctly.
I think that it isn't possible to make a Tolkien movie correct without any mistakes. (I hate mistakes)
I think that also in the hobbit movies would be some fundamental mistakes.
Only a person who knows all about Tolkiens world could made a film without mistakes.

I also read the first and the second part of the history of middle-earth and the earlier concepts of Tolkiens world was also interesting but very complicated!
I think that many people who critizise Tolkien had not even read his works.

So I'm "necrobumping" this thread, because it's Hobbit Day and it's the most-recent-posted-in thread that showed up under [Search] with the term "Hobbit."

So Happy Hobbit Day. Are hobbits, elves, dwarves, maiar, valar and Iluvatar still interesting to anyone? Anyone else have Arda as a Special Interest?

I write in tengwar and struggle to keep myself from speaking like Smeagol sometimes. Am I the only one?

To say I'm interested in Tolkiens Legendarium would be an understatement. Just finished reading the Silmarillion actually. I also have a good Smeagol impression.

I read the Silmarillion as a bedtime story. My favourite parts are Beren and Luthien, Melian and Thingol, and the parts about Earendil [sorry if I misspelled his name]. I also like the fact that Beren and Luthien's names are on the gravestones of Prf. Tolkien and his wife Edith.

My late brother was a Tolkien expert pre-Internet. Since he was a little kid. You could ask him anything and he could go on and on about it. You could randomly ask, what connection does this and that have, what is the back story of this character? He'd know and go on about it for some time.

He read about everything though. He read a novel-sized book every day. He was an expert in a few other fantasy and sci-fi authors, and wrote stories about battle mechs. He was an interesting person.

I do like the movies a lot, but a neat trick I've discovered is to view the movies as a sort of alternate, entertaining, non-canon version so that you can enjoy both the books and the movies in different ways. Who here besides me was awestruck by Benedict Cumberbach as Smaug and amazed by Cate Blanchett as Galadriel? And Sir Ian Mckellan too, he's epic!

I wish I had the time to read a book every day. Your brother sounded really interesting, wish I could have met him.

I just exercise cognitive dissonance when watching the movies. I'm always going to love the LOTR movies because I got to see them in theaters when they came out when I was 7-10. They're always going to mean a lot to me no matter how much Peter Jackson tweaked the source material. The Hobbit Trilogy is another matter though, I find it really trying on my patience to not just use them as clay pigeons. There's some really good stuff in the Hobbit films too that I really appreciate because I now know the larger narrative of the entire Legendarium, but when they go off course it just gets unbearable. Dat liquid gold, annoys the Tolkienist and the Geologist in me as well.

So, Feyokien, what's your avatar supposed to be? I've been wondering about that for a while, actually.
Oh, well. Liquid gold aside, I still like Smaug in the movie.
I read about a book a day, mainly because I read so fast.

Yes Smaug was very well done, one of the few shining moments of the films

Hah! I should have known it was Wander! Silly me! I like Shadow of the Colossus, even though I've never played it. The ending nearly had me in tears! When I'm at school, I often pretend that I'm Link on Epona or Wander on Agro going on an adventure, and I literally gallop down the hallways at high speed.

Thanks! Oh, so, who are your favourite Tolkien characters? Or are there too many to list? Ha ha. Random thought: Isn't it slightly disconcerting that since the Hobbit was written before Tolkien really worked out what sort of place Middle-earth was? I think Bilbo actually mentions China in one chapter. Oh, here's something funny: my Mum is a great Richard Armitage fan, and since I naturally have most of the Hobbit Lego, she decided to claim the Thorin figure as her own and insisted on dressing him up like a bagpiper [I got the piper out of a random mini-figure package]!

Actually Tolkien had some of the frame work for the Silmarillion and other stories worked out during the first World War, long before he published the Hobbit. He wrote the Hobbit initially as an unconnected affair, but then decided to incorporate it into his already rich world. I'd say my favorite characters would have to be Turin, Hurin, Fingolfin, Fëanor, Sauron, Melkor, Manwe, Nienna, Ulmo, Arien, Eärendil, Galadrial, Maedhros, Boromir, Faramir, Aragorn, Frodo, Smaug, Shelob, Ungoliant, Bilbo, and Gandalf. I wish I had the money to purchase all the Tolkien Lego sets now, before they get even more expensive. Sucks being a poor college student when they finally start making really cool lego sets.

I read Narn i Hin Hurin a month or so ago. It was better than I thought it would be.

Wish I had more time to shmooze but I'll have to leave the library soon and go home and eat cheezburgers with NT hubby.

The liquid gold in the Hobbit was awesome as eye-candy, but a major mistake in translating the book to cinema. As was almost everything in all of the movies in my opinion.

Here's something fun we could do. Does anyone want to play a 'you know you like TLOTRs too much when...' game?
I'll start.
1) you have a sign on your bedroom door with the inscription of the Gates of Moria on it in English, French, Japanese, and Elvish [or Quenya or whatever type of Elvish is on that gate].
2) You own the theatrical and extended editions of all six movies [or I will once BOTFA comes out again in November].
3) You have most of the Lego sets.
4) You are out walking and you suddenly yell, 'Get off the road! Quick!'
5) You've developed a liking for mushrooms.
6) You want to go to New Zealand so badly!
7) You own a hematite [or any kind of] ring and pretend that it is the One Ring.
You uses expressions like, 'By the grace of the Valar' or 'Gandalf's beard!'
9) Whenever you go on a trip you say that you are going on a 'mission-quest-thing'.
10) You pretend that shortbread is Lembas bread.
11) You can say that you have Hobbit ancestry with a straight face.
