I'm glad you made this post. I too had a strong fascination with police cars. I
don't know and cannot remember when or how this started, but when I was five
years old, one of the things next to my obsessions with railroad crossing
signals, which I still have to this day as I talked about and still am on
another post, I was obsessed with police cars, especially because of the lights.
Actually, when I was like one or more likely two years old and at South Lake
(now West Field) Mall in Hobart, Indiana, (the part of Hobart that used to be Merrilville east of I-65, west of I-65 is still Merrilville) I saw this toy police car I really
wanted and I kept taking it off the shelf but my mother, or whoever else was
with us, kept putting it back. I never did get that police car, but that's
okay, I know I didn't need it.
I did get other toy police cars though when I was little and years thereafter,
some of which I still have to this day. When I was five, I got two police cars
with working red and working sirens. I still have one of them but it no longer
works, but I can still play with it. I don't have the other one anymore but
that's okay, it wasn't as good looking anyway.
One time, and I was also five when this happened, we had a police officer pull
us over. I didn't understand what was going on but I think I was excited, but
not openly excited to see the police car with it's lights on behind us, unaware
that the person driving us was getting pulled over for a reason. I don't know
the reason because either I didn't pay attention (a problem I really had back
then and can still have to this day) or no one told me. Now that I'm older and
smarter, I'm sure our driver was a bit embarrassed, or at least wasn't happy to
get pulled over, I wouldn't be if it happened to me.
I think I liked police cars with all red lights and maybe those with one blue and one
red light, but didn't like the ones with all blue lights because I didn't like the color blue and didn't care much for that color, red was, and still is, my most favorite color. I'm still not too crazy about police cars with all blue lights, even though my largest toy police car has all blue lights (which don't work) (actually it's a Highway Patrol car.) But unfortunately for me that's the way all the police cars and other emergency vehicles are in Germany, every emergency vehicle I saw had all blue lights (well I might have seen one with a red light, but all the emergency vehicles I saw in Germany had all blue lights and zero red lights (I might have seen a fire truck with a red light on it.)
But I do like police cars with blue and red lights. There's at least one country, according to a picture in a magazine I read, that has police cars with orange lights, but I don't know which country it is yet and would like to know. But I saw a picture of a police car (or maybe it was a security car) with orange lights on it and I did see two police officers or deputies. It looked a little odd to me because police car lights are usually all blue, all red, or one of both.
Besides light color, I also liked the police cars used in the early 90s when I was little. I do like the police cars we use today. I'll show you is what I mean later by way of visual aides..
