I wanted to have a picture of my pets, my old avatar was also a cat with link and I didn't want to change too much.

Yes, but I don't know how to do an avatar at 140 pixels.

go to a image customization program(such as paint or photoshop) and use stretch/skew, this will do the pixel resizing without cutting the image to were it shows a part of what you want.

I like my avatar, and really bad grammar aggravates me. I don't mind a few missed periods or a screwed up word, but when the sentence becomes impossible to read...
