Just because you are "nice," you are seen as being a butt-kisser. You are thought of as somebody who would compliment somebody to gain a favor or something.

I hear ya. The crazy thing is that people generally look down on bullying and slanderous comments. But when people try to do the opposite and compliment and build people up, this is also looked down upon... at least by some people.
I guess there is a point when it becomes obvious that a person might be kissing up, but I think generally it's not the case when people compliment or say good things about another.
Especially when I'm at work, I only give compliments when I mean it. And it is for the sake of raising morale and letting a person know they are on the right track. It's like positive reinforcement. Much better than beating on people.
